New map application here Maps from Nokia has already appeared in the App Store, and everyone was wondering if the Finnish company could be a competitor for Google and its maps, which disappeared from the iOS 6 system and users are looking for a replacement for them, because the map materials from Apple are sometimes not enough. However, we must state that it does not have Nokia on Google.

We tested Here Maps and although they offer some interesting features, they certainly won't become our primary map application. Nokia Here Maps also develops for other operating systems, so the application interface looks like it comes from another system. It's a matter of habit, but I personally don't like the Here Maps interface very much and would prefer traditional iOS elements.

However, the functionality and condition of the map materials is important. And you, unfortunately, are not famous in the Czech Republic. Google maps are much more detailed, while the main negative of Here Maps is primarily undrawn buildings. The truth is that not everyone needs to see every building on the map, but when I was already used to something standard from iOS 5 and below, why suddenly go to something worse? Compared to Apple's maps, however, Here Maps are more accurate and detailed. However, the appearance of the backgrounds themselves speaks against them, because Nokia uses more gentle rendering for data, which is known. And one more thing, which is a much more fundamental problem – Here Maps have completely unusable satellite images in the Czech Republic. At least in the areas where we tested them. For example, Wenceslas Square is rendered fine, but if we move to lesser-known places, the Nokia maps will give us unpleasant surprises.

Comparison of map materials:

Here Maps could be an interesting option for those who like to use POIs (Points of Interests). During our testing, we came across a fairly comprehensive database of restaurants, shops, monuments and other interesting places, which often include a phone number and, of course, you can navigate to the given location. This brings us to voice step-by-step navigation, which, however, only works in walking mode.

Nokia's Here Maps can certainly find their users, but we don't expect any significant reduction in the map pie, especially on iOS.
