Yesterday we wrote about the evacuation of the Apple Store in Zurich on Tuesday, when an explosion occurred during a routine service battery replacement. A replacement battery caught fire out of nowhere, burning the service technician and enveloping the entire store area in toxic smoke. Fifty people had to be evacuated and the local Apple Store was closed for several hours. Another report emerged tonight describing a very similar incident, but this time in Valencia, Spain.

The incident took place yesterday afternoon and the scenario was the same as the case mentioned above. The service technician was replacing the battery on some unspecified iPhone (in Zurich it was an iPhone 6s), which suddenly caught fire. In this case, however, there were no injuries, the upper floor of the store just filled with smoke, which the store employees vented through the windows. They covered the damaged battery with clay so that it wouldn't catch fire again. The called-in fire department was basically out of a job, apart from disposing of the battery.

This is the second report of this kind within the last forty-eight hours. It remains to be seen if this is just a fluke, or if similar cases will multiply with the current battery replacement campaign for older iPhones. If the fault is on the side of the batteries, this is certainly not the last incident. The discounted battery replacement program is just getting started and thousands of people around the world can be expected to take advantage of it. If you have problems with the battery in your iPhone (for example, it is visibly swollen, contact the nearest certified service center).
