Yesterday, i.e. on Wednesday, May 11, Google held its keynote for the Google I/O 2022 conference. It is similar to Apple's WWDC, where the company's news is revealed not only with regard to the system, so primarily Android, but also hardware. We have seen a relatively rich storm of interesting products, which are of course directly directed against the competition, i.e. Apple.

Like Apple, Google is an American company, which is why it is a more direct competitor than, for example, South Korean Samsung and other Chinese brands. However, it's true that Google may be a software giant, but it may still be looking for hardware, even though it has already shown the 7th generation of its Pixel phone. For the first time ever, he came up with a watch, TWS headphones, and he's trying it again with tablets, with which he failed twice already.

Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro

If the Pixel 6a is a lightweight version of the 6 and 6 Pro models, and can therefore be compared more with the iPhone SE model of the 3rd generation, the Pixels 7 will go directly against the iPhone 14. Unlike Apple, however, Google has no problem showing what its news will look like. Even though we will probably not see them until October, we know that their design will be based on the current sixes, when the space for the cameras will change slightly and, of course, new color variants will come. Nevertheless, these are still very pleasant devices.

The Pixel 6a will go on sale earlier, from July 21 for $449, which is about CZK 11 without tax. It will offer a 6,1" FHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 2 x 340 pixels with a frequency of 1 Hz, a Google Tensor chip, 080 GB of LPDDR60 RAM and 6 GB of storage. The battery should be 5mAh, the main camera is 128MPx and it is complemented by a 4306MPx ultra-wide-angle camera. On the front side, there is a hole in the middle of the display containing an 12,2MPx camera.

Google Pixel Watch

For the first time, Google is also trying this with a smart watch. We already knew their form long in advance, so the design of the watch relies on a circular design, similar to the Galaxy Watch4 and differently to the Apple Watch. The case is made of recycled steel, there is also a crown at the three o'clock position intended for various interactions. There is also a button next to it. The straps should be very easy to replace, similar to the Apple Watch.

The watch supports LTE, is also 50m water resistant, and of course there is NFC for Google Wallet payments (as it was renamed Google Pay). The sensors put together in one row will be able to continuously monitor the heart rate and sleep, there will be the possibility of connecting to the Fitbit account that Google bought. But it will also be connected to Google Fit and Samsung Health. But we didn't learn much about the most important thing, i.e. Wear OS. Practically only that there will be Maps and Google Assistant. We don't know the price or the release date, although they are likely to arrive alongside the Pixel 7 in October this year.

Pixel Buds Pro

Wearables are becoming more and more popular and TWS headphones are gaining traction. That's why we have Google Pixel Buds Pro here. Of course, these are based on the company's previous line of headphones, but it is the Pro moniker that clearly sets them against the AirPods Pro, and as you can probably guess, the main focus here is also surround sound and active noise cancellation. The interesting thing is that Google used its own chip in them.

They should last 11 hours on a single charge, 7 hours with ANC on. There is also support for Google Assistant, there is multi-point pairing and four color variants. They will be available from July 21 for a price of 199 dollars without tax (approx. 4 CZK).

pixel tablet

With the previous hardware, it's clear in every respect which Apple product they're up against. However, this is not quite the case with the Pixel tablet. It is the closest thing to Apple's basic iPad, but it looks like it will bring something more that can take it to a completely different level of use. In any case, it is necessary to cool passions right at the beginning - the Pixel tablet will not arrive in a year at the earliest.

Like the Pixel phones, it should include a Tensor chip, there will be only a single camera on the back of the device, and there will be relatively wide bezels. Hence the similarity to the basic iPad. However, what will probably set it apart a lot are the four pins on its back. These may thus confirm earlier speculations that the tablet would be part of a product called Nest Hub, where you would very easily connect the tablet to the base of the smart speaker. But it will be charged through the present USB-C.

Other

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, very surprisingly also presented the company's efforts in augmented reality. Specifically for smart glasses. Even though all the materials were simulated, it is clear here that Google wants to overtake Apple and is already starting to prepare the ground. According to him, he already has a prototype that is being tested.

Google glass

What we didn't see at all, even though many hoped for it, is Google's own folding device. Whether the Pixel Fold or anything else remained shrouded in a suitably thick fog. There were more than enough leaks, and they all agreed that a similar device would at least be shown at Google I/O, as was the case with the Pixel 7 and the Pixel tablet. For example, in the fall.
