In April of this year, information about a data leak that discussed the news of the then-expected MacBook Pro generation (2021) flew through the Internet. Coincidentally, this device was finally introduced in mid-October, thanks to which we can already evaluate today how accurate the data leak actually was, or what it was wrong about. However, the mentioned data did not leak on its own. The hacking organization REvil had a hand in it at the time, and one of its members, who may have also participated in this attack, has now been arrested in Poland.

How it all went

Before we focus on the actual arrest of the aforementioned hacker, let's quickly summarize how the earlier attack by the REvil group actually took place and who was targeted. In April, this hacking organization targeted the company Quanta Computer, which ranks among the Apple suppliers and thus has access to strictly secured information. But the hackers managed to get a literal treasure, exactly what they were looking for – schematics of the expected 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pros. Of course, they immediately used this to their advantage. They shared part of the information on the Internet and started blackmailing Apple itself. The giant was supposed to pay them a "fee" of 50 million dollars, with the threat that otherwise more data about the upcoming projects of the Cupertino giant would be released.

But the situation changed relatively quickly. The hacker group REvil is from the Internet she took down all information and threats and started playing dead bug. Not much has been said about this incident since then. However, the given behavior questioned the original claim about possible changes, which the apple growers soon forgot and stopped paying attention to the whole situation.

What predictions were confirmed

With the passage of time, it is also interesting to evaluate which predictions have actually come true, i.e. what REvil has excelled at. In this regard, we must put the predicted return of ports in the first place, when there was already talk of a MacBook Pro with USB-C/Thunderbolt connectors, HDMI, 3,5 mm jack, SD card reader and the legendary MagSafe port. Of course, it doesn't end there. At the same time, they mentioned the expected removal of the not-so-popular Touch Bar and even mentioned the cutout in the display, which today serves the needs of a Full HD camera (1080p).

Arrest of hackers

Of course, the REvil group did not end with the attack on Quanta Computer. Even after this event, it continued with a series of cyberattacks and, according to current information, it targeted about 800 to 1500 other companies just by attacking the management software designed for the giant Kasey. Currently, fortunately, a Ukrainian named Yaroslav Vasinskyi, who is closely connected with the group and apparently participated in the attacks on Kaseya, has been arrested. but it is no longer certain whether he also worked on the Quanta Computer case. His arrest took place in Poland, where he is currently awaiting extradition to the United States. At the same time, another member of the organization named Yevgeniy Polyanin was detained.

Twice as bright prospects certainly do not await these men. In the United States, they will face charges of fraud, conspiracy, fraudulent activities related to protected computers and money laundering. As a result, the hacker Vasinskya faces 115 years behind bars, and Polyanin even up to 145 years.
