The US Federal Bureau of Investigation was unable to crack the security of the San Bernardino terrorist's iPhone for a long time, until finally the Department of Justice tried to force Apple to cooperate through the courts. In the end, however, the FBI the hackers called out, who helped with the whole situation.

FBI Director James Comey has now revealed at a security conference in London that his office paid hackers more than $1,3 million (over 31 million crowns). Comey would not talk about specific numbers, but told reporters that the FBI paid more to get into the encrypted iPhone 5C than he himself will make for the rest of his tenure.

"A lot," Comey told reporters when asked about the price. “More than I'll make in the rest of this job, which is seven years and four months. But I think it was worth it," added Comey, who, according to official data, should earn $183 a year.

The Justice Department said in March that with the help of an unnamed third party, it was able to access an iPhone 5C seized from a terrorist who shot and killed 14 people with an accomplice in California last year. which ended the closely watched court case between the US government and Apple.

However, the FBI then confirmed that the method for which it paid hackers the most in its history only works on iPhone 5C with iOS 9, not on newer phones with Touch ID.
