The popular notification system for OS X was released in version 1.3. The application has been rewritten for OS X Lion and offers several new features.

The first innovation is distribution through the Mac App Store. This is a logical step that will make it easier to update the application, so users will always have the latest version available. The second, less joyful, novelty is the price. It currently costs €1,59, while you can still download the previous one for free version 1.2.2.

Growl 1.3 no longer appears in system preferences. The notorious paw is now located in the menu bar. This leads to faster access to the application settings. On the other hand, if you already have everything set up, the icon in the menu bar takes up unnecessary space. I would therefore like to be able to turn off its display.

Notifications can be displayed classically in the four corners of the screen. If you don't like the look of the ones offered, you have the option to download another from gallery.

Probably the most interesting function is the Notification Queue - an imitation of the Notification Center in the upcoming iOS 5. Notifications are placed in a queue after a certain period of inactivity. After coming to the computer, they will all "buff" you in one window, so you won't miss any event. If you would like to see all notifications arranged chronologically, you have that option. The History tab is located in the Growl application window.
