The popular notification system for OS X was released in version 1.3. The application has been rewritten for OS X Lion and offers several new features.
The first innovation is distribution through the Mac App Store. This is a logical step that will make it easier to update the application, so users will always have the latest version available. The second, less joyful, novelty is the price. It currently costs €1,59, while you can still download the previous one for free version 1.2.2.
Growl 1.3 no longer appears in system preferences. The notorious paw is now located in the menu bar. This leads to faster access to the application settings. On the other hand, if you already have everything set up, the icon in the menu bar takes up unnecessary space. I would therefore like to be able to turn off its display.
Notifications can be displayed classically in the four corners of the screen. If you don't like the look of the ones offered, you have the option to download another from gallery.
Probably the most interesting function is the Notification Queue - an imitation of the Notification Center in the upcoming iOS 5. Notifications are placed in a queue after a certain period of inactivity. After coming to the computer, they will all "buff" you in one window, so you won't miss any event. If you would like to see all notifications arranged chronologically, you have that option. The History tab is located in the Growl application window.
Growl - €1,59 (Mac App Store)
Is it worth investing in the paid version when I already have the free version?
Yes, it arrived in the Mac App Store, but already a week ago, thanks for the news :)
When I saw it in the Mac App Store a few days ago, I was quite surprised. I thought this was already integrated into the system. There are growl notifications in the system, so how is this different from them? Too many settings?
App innovation consists in stuffing it into the menu bar and charging – megaCool. A bit hardcore for a very complementary utility? I just hope this isn't the start of charging for anything that even remotely resembles an app.
Pavel: unfortunately, it will be more like that.
It's 40 kroner for someone to put in the work, that's like going out for ice cream, so why not?
cmd + drag the cursor from the menubar to make the icons disappear
Unfortunately, some icons are immune to this procedure.
I would not see a problem in charging, I would like to send my €1.60 to the author. But I only see "Innovation" in that message queue. The icon has always been in the menubar (at least as far as I know Growl can do it) and removing it from the system preferences is definitely more harmful (I assume that it only happened because of the conditions in the AppStore).
But I understand that the author wants to make some money from it years later, and I don't blame him at all. €1.59?
I definitely won't buy it because of the unremovable icon from the menu bar. It is similar with Dropbox. A useless icon that only takes up space and cannot be removed.
Hello, this is probably a question asked in the wrong place, but I don't have any application in the "Applications" tab, I tried to remove it, then install it again, but unfortunately I don't have a single application in the options :(
