Google announced today that it is rolling out a new feature in the form of the ability to automatically delete location and activity history on the web and apps. The feature is supposed to work in favor of user privacy and should be gradually rolled out worldwide over the next few weeks.

Users will thus be able to decide whether to delete the mentioned data manually at their own discretion, every three months or every eighteen months. Before the introduction of the automatic deletion of location and activity history on the web and in applications, users had no choice but to manually delete the relevant data or disable both functions completely.

The location history feature is used to record the history of places the user has visited. Web and app activity, in turn, is used to track the websites a user has viewed as well as the apps they have used. Google uses this data primarily for recommendations and synchronization across devices.

David Monsees, product manager of Google Search, said in his statement that by introducing the aforementioned function, the company wants to make it easier for users to manage their data. Over time, Google could introduce an automatic deletion option for any data it stores about users, such as YouTube search history.
