Google Maps celebrates 15 years with the release of a new version of the application

Google Maps - whether its mobile app or web browser version - has been very popular for many years. Today, Google Maps celebrates fifteen years since its inception. On this occasion, Google has decided to redesign the Google Maps mobile application, both for iOS and Android.

The mentioned changes will especially please those who use Google Maps mainly in cities. Users in the app will soon find more details about specific points of interest in cities - restaurants, businesses and tourist attractions. In addition, the maps will highlight places and sights worth visiting.

A total of five items will replace the trio of tabs in the bottom bar (Explore, Commute and For You), links to saved places or perhaps updates will be added to the bar. The Explore tab will offer users even more information, ratings and reviews of over 200 million locations worldwide. It will not only be restaurants or hotels, but also tourist attractions or monuments. In the Commute tab, users will get information about current traffic and will be able to view the shortest possible route home or to work. The For You tab will be replaced by the "Save" item, and users will be able to conveniently view saved places, plan their trips, or share recommendations of already visited places.

There will also be a tab in the bottom bar, through which users will be able to contribute to the operation of Google Maps by publishing information about the places they have visited, or by adding reviews or their own photos. The update tab will then inform the user about the latest trends in the area, and people will also be able to ask questions to the operators of individual businesses.

The "annual" changes also include a new application icon design, in which the map image will be replaced by a pin symbol. According to Google's official statement, this change is supposed to represent a transition from mere transportation to a destination to discovering new places and experiences. Functions related to public transport will also be improved - Google Maps will now bring information about accessibility, safety, temperature and other parameters.

Google will start distributing the said update today, at the time of writing the Google Maps for iOS update was not yet available.
