The iOS 6 maps debacle made Google Maps one of the most anticipated apps of the year. While the application itself is great, it suffers in particular from low-quality map materials, the supplier of which is mainly TomTom. Apple is working hard on fixes, but it will take years to get to where Google is now.

There have been many reports regarding the Google Maps App. Someone claimed that it is already waiting in the App Store, according to others, Google has not even started with it yet. Developer Ben Guild shed light on the whole situation. He on his own blog has published several partial screenshots (or rather, a photo of a screen with a running application) from the in-progress alpha version that the programmers in Mountain View are working hard on.

The application should have several improvements compared to the previous version from iOS 5. In particular, they will be vector, just like the Maps in iOS 6 (Google Maps in previous iOS were bitmap), by rotating with two fingers it will be possible to rotate the map at will, and the application should also be very fast . The screenshots themselves don't say much, only hinting at the boxy design of the search box that's also seen on Android. It is expected that Google Maps will also offer information about traffic and public transport, Street View and a 3D view, just like Android applications, but there is probably no point in counting on navigation.

No date is known yet, but Google will likely aim for a December release. Until then, iOS 6 users will have to make do with Gottwaldov, Prague Shooter's Island, or the non-existent Prague Castle.
