The global pandemic has changed the ways in which we communicate. You can also make voice or video calls in the e-mail client on your mobile device. We are talking about the Gmail application, which is now offering this option to its users. Moreover, not only on iOS, but also on Android, so it doesn't matter what device the other party uses.

So Gmail was already able to do this before, but it was done by sending an invitation to a Google Meet video conference call, which was not only limiting, but also unnecessarily complicated. However, you will now be able to make a 1:1 call directly in the interface of the title across devices and platforms, group calls should be added later.

So, if you want to call someone in Gmail, you just have to select one of the icons in the upper right corner of the interface of the selected chat. The one with the handset is used for audio calls, the one with the camera for video. To join the call, you select one of the icons again, depending on whether you want to be heard or seen. Missed calls are then displayed with a red phone or camera icon for the contact in the chat list.

Gmail at the center of communication platforms

This feature will allow you to seamlessly switch between chat, video call or audio call when needed, which will help you work better with colleagues, or just communicate more pleasantly with family and friends. Google also mentions that while you can also join a call in the Google Chat app, you'll be redirected to Gmail where the call will take place. If you don't have Gmail installed on your device, you'll be prompted to download it from the App Store.

However, Google is planning to bring the same functionality to Google Chat, but Gmail has been prioritized first. After all, it is also based on the intention of the company, which wants to have Gmail at the center of its communication platforms. The feature has been available since December 6, but its rollout is gradual and all app users should have it available within 14 days at the latest.
