The software keyboard that the iPad has is excellent for typing. At least I'm perfectly used to it and I practically don't use an external keyboard, but it has the upper hand in one respect - text editing. The software keyboard lacks navigation arrows...

How apt noted John Gruber, the iPad keyboard isn't bad at all for typing, but it's seriously bad for editing text, and I can only agree with him. In order to move the text, you have to take your hands off the keyboard and manually tap the place where you want to place the cursor, while for accuracy you still have to wait for the magnifying glass to appear - all this is tedious, annoying and impractical.

Daniel Chase Hooper decided to do something about this evil, who created koncept for a new way of editing text, using gestures. Its solution is simple: you slide your finger across the keyboard and the cursor moves accordingly. If you use two fingers, the cursor jumps even faster, while holding Shift you can mark text in the same way. It's intuitive, fast and convenient.

It was originally just a concept, but Hooper's idea was so popular that Kyle Howells immediately took it up a notch and created a working tweak for the jailbreak community. His work can be found in Cydia under the title SwipeSelection and it works exactly as Hooper devised. To top it all off, it's available for free, so anyone with a jailbreak and iOS 5.0 and up can install it. SwipeSelection even works on an iPhone, although the smaller keyboard makes it a little more difficult to use.

The software keyboard in iOS is something that Apple could focus on in the new iOS 6, which should debut at WWDC in June. It is a question whether Apple will choose this method or come up with its own solution, but it is at least certain that users would welcome practically any improvement with open arms.
