Last week, we saw the presentation of the PlayStation 5 game console. The "Five" with its design and functions is significantly different from the first generation, which many people still consider to be a breakthrough in the world of the game industry. In today's article, let's briefly recall the introduction and beginnings of the first generation of this popular console.

Even before the arrival of the first generation PlayStation, there were mainly cartridge game consoles available on the market. However, the production of these cartridges was quite demanding in time and money, and the capacity and capabilities of the cartridges were slowly no longer sufficient for the increasing demands of players and the advanced functions of newer games. Gradually, games began to be released more and more frequently on compact discs, which offered many more options regarding the media side of games and also met more demanding data volume requirements.

Sony has been developing its gaming console for many years, and has dedicated a dedicated division to its development. The first generation PlayStation was released in Japan on December 3, 1994, and players in North America and Europe also received it in September of the following year. The console practically immediately became a hit, overshadowing even the competing Super Nintendo and Sega Saturn at the time. In Japan, it managed to sell 100 thousand units during the first day of sales, PlayStation also became the first game console whose sales over time exceeded the milestone of 100 million units sold.

Players could play titles such as WipEout, Ridge Racer or Tekken on the first PlayStation, later came Crash Bandicoot and various racing and sports games. The console could play not only game discs, but also music CDs, and a little later - with the help of an appropriate adapter - also video CDs. Not only consumers were excited about the first PlayStation, but also experts and journalists, who praised, for example, the quality of the sound processor or graphics. The PlayStation was supposed to represent a balance between quality performance, ease of use and an affordable price, which for designer Ken Kutaragi was, in his own words, quite a challenge. Priced at $299, the console received an enthusiastic response from the audience at the launch event.

In 2000, Sony released the PlayStation 2, sales of which reached 155 million over the years, the same year saw the release of the PlayStation One. Six years after the release of the second generation came the PlayStation 3, in 2013 the PlayStation 4 and this year the PlayStation 5. Sony's console is considered by many to be a device that significantly changed the gaming world.
