A week ago, the 15 2015" MacBook Pro battery replacement program began. Although Apple said the number of affected computers is small, photos have already surfaced online. And thanks to them, we see that the consequences can be great.

15" MacBook Pro 2015 user Steven Gagne shared photos on Facebook after his computer's battery exploded. Unfortunately, Steven was unlucky as the computer caught fire just three days before the official start of the battery exchange program.

In the post describes on Facebook, what actually happened at night:

Monday night we were lying in bed while the battery in my MacBook Pro caught fire. There was so much smoke from the small fire that eventually our whole house was filled with it. You can imagine how quickly I jumped out of bed. The first thing I noticed was the sound and then the strong chemical and burning smell.

Steven's computer was not in use at the time of the fire. It wasn't even in the charger. This may have saved the whole house from fire in the end.

I normally leave my MacBook on the couch or in a basket with notepads and other things. Fortunately, I left it on the table this time, although I don't really know why. Anyway, I think it kept our whole house from burning down.

Apple considers the entire 15 MacBook Pro 2015" battery replacement program to be voluntary. According to the official statement, only a small percentage of laptops that were sold between 2015 and 2017 have a defective battery.

For Apple, a small percentage, in absolute terms almost half a million MacBook Pros

But according to the Consumer Safety Commission, approximately 432 MacBook Pros in the US and another 000 in Canada are equipped with this battery. In the meantime, 26 incidents have already been reported to the authority, where 000 refer to damage to property and 26 even to slight injury to health.

All owners of these computers should check their serial numbers on this Apple website. In the event of a match, do not hesitate to take the computer to an authorized service center (Český Servis) as soon as possible, where they are entitled to a free battery replacement.

To find out your model, click the Apple () logo in the menu bar in the upper-left corner of the screen and choose About This Mac. Check if you have a "MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)" model. If yes, go to the support page, where you enter the serial number. Use it to find out if your computer is included in the exchange program.
