The power of mobile phones is that once you unbox them and fire up the camera app, you can immediately take photos and videos with them. Just aim at the scene and press the shutter, anytime and (almost) anywhere. But the result will also look like that. So it takes some thought to make your images as pleasing as possible. And from that, here is our series Taking photos with an iPhone, in which we show you everything you need. Now let's take a look at how Live Photo editing works.

In the Photos app, you can edit Live Photos, change their cover photos, and add fun effects like Reflection or Loop. In addition to photo editing tools (such as adding filters or cropping a photo), you can also change the cover photo, shorten the recording, or turn off the sound for Live Photo recordings. This live photo is actually such a short clip.

Basic Live Photo editing

  • Open the Photos app.
  • Find the Live Photo entry (the image with the concentric circles icon).
  • Tap Edit.
  • Click on the concentric circles icon.

Here you will then have several options to choose from:

  • Cover photo settings: Move the white frame in the image viewer, click "Set as Cover Photo" and then click Done.
  • Shortening the Live Photo recording: Drag the ends of the image viewer to select the images to be played back in the Live Photo recording.
  • Creating a still photo: Tap the Live button at the top of the screen to turn off Live. The Live Photo recording becomes a still photo showing the title picture of the recording.
  • Mute Live Photo recording sound: Tap the speaker symbol at the top of the screen. Tap again to turn the sound back on.

Adding effects to a Live Photo recording

You can add effects to your Live Photo recordings to turn them into fun videos. Just open such a picture again and swipe up to see the effects. Then just select one of the following options:

  • Loop: Repeats the action in the video over and over in an infinite loop.
  • Reflection: Plays the action backwards and forwards alternately.
  • Long exposure: Simulates a digital SLR-like long exposure effect with motion blur.
