The power of cell phones is that once you unbox them and fire up the camera app, you can immediately take photos and videos with them. Just aim at the scene and press the shutter, anytime and (almost) anywhere. But the result will also look like that. So it takes some thought to make your images as pleasing as possible. And from that, here is our series Taking photos with an iPhone, in which we show you everything you need. Now let's look at iCloud Photos.

The primary function of iCloud Photos is to automatically upload them to Apple's servers, so you can access them from any device, whenever you need them. But it's important to mention that this is not a backup of them, because any changes you make to your collection on one device will automatically be reflected on the others - if you delete one photo, it will be deleted everywhere. So the photos are not duplicated!

Photos on iCloud and turning on the feature

First of all, you must be logged in under the same Apple ID on all devices and have iCloud set up on them. It is worth mentioning here that the 5GB capacity that is available for free will probably not be enough for you and you will need some kind of paid plan. To turn it on on iPhone (and iPad), go to Settings, where at the top select Your name. Then choose iCloud and tap the menu Fotky. Here you can already activate the offer Photos on iCloud.

iCloud Photos behavior

On iCloud, your photos and videos are saved in full resolution and in supported formats, i.e.: HEIF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEVC, MP4 and in those that create special modes of the Camera application for slow-motion recordings, time-lapse, etc. In the same way that changes in the sense of deleting a record are written everywhere, editing in the Photos application will also be reflected there. But your edits within the app are non-destructive, so you can always go back to the source footage.

However, many users don't turn on iCloud Photos to access them from anywhere, but simply because they're running out of storage space on their device. In order for your photo content not to take up so much space, you need to turn on the option Optimize storage. You will do this in Settings -> your name -> iCloud -> Photos a Optimize storage.

The original records of all your photos and videos will then be stored only on iCloud, and you will have their reduced versions on your device. However, you can always download the original quality back to your iPhone. Please note that it will take some time to send photos and videos to iCloud after you turn on iCloud Photos. This depends not only on the size of your library, but also on the speed of your internet connection. In any case, you should be on Wi-Fi when you turn on the feature.
