SOCIETY Fitbit presented a few days ago Fitbit senseTM, its most advanced health watch yet. They bring innovative sensor and software technologies, including the world's first Electrodermal Activity (EDA) sensor on a watch. It helps manage stress, along with advanced heart rate monitoring technology, a new EKG app and a wrist-based body surface temperature sensor. Everything is powered by a battery strong enough to last the new Fitbit Sense watch for 6 or more days on a single charge. That in conjunction with a six-month trial license Fitbit PremiumTM, will help track key health and rest trends like heart rate variability, respiratory rate and blood oxygenation with the new Health Metrics interface. Fitbit is also launching Fitbit Versa 3TM , with new health, fitness and voice control features, including built-in GPS. The latest news is fitbit inspire 2TM. A new version of the most affordable bracelet in the offer, which will offer, for example, an extended battery life exceeding 10 days. The band comes with advanced health features like Active Zone Minutes, Fitbit Premium One Year Trial and many more. With these advanced features now even more accessible, the Fitbit platform helps you better understand and take control of your health during this challenging time.

"Our mission to make everyone in the world healthier has never been more important than today. COVID-19 has shown us all how important it is to take care of our physical and mental health and well-being,” says James Park, co-founder and CEO of Fitbit. “The new products and services are our most innovative yet and combine the most advanced sensors and algorithms to discover more information about our body and health. Thanks to this, it is possible to have complete control over your health. We bring a breakthrough in the field of wearable devices, helping to better understand and manage stress and heart health. We connect your key health indicators to track things like body temperature, heart rate variability (HRV) and blood oxygenation (Sp02) to see how everything is working at a glance. Most importantly, we're making health accessible through tracking data that until now has only been measured in a doctor's office no more than twice a year. The data obtained can then be used to gain a holistic view of health and wellness at a time when it is most needed.”

Stress under control for better health

Stress is a universal global problem that one in three people suffers from and brings not only psychological but also physiological symptoms. And if not managed properly, it can contribute to a whole host of health problems. These include an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression. Combining the use of the Fitbit Sense device together with the Fitbit application will allow insight into the body's reactions to stress using tools that will help manage its physical manifestations as well. This unique way to manage stress was created by Fitbit's team of behavioral health experts with over a decade of experience in mental health diagnosis and treatment, led by medical experts from Stanford and MIT.

The new EDA sensor of the Fitbit Sense watch measures electrodermal activity directly from the wrist. By placing your palm on the display of the watch, small electrical changes in the sweat tissue of the skin can be detected, which will help to understand the body's reaction to stressors and thus better manage stress. Through rapid measurement, it is possible to monitor the body's reactions to external stimuli, such as meditation and relaxation within the guided mindfulness exercises of the Fitbit application. At the end of each exercise, a graph of the electrodermal activity response will be displayed on the device and in the mobile application. The user can easily see his progress and evaluate how the change is reflected in his emotions.

The new Fitbit Stress Management Score calculates how the body responds to stress based on heart rate, sleep and activity level. Fitbit Sense users can find it in the new Stress Management tab of the Fitbit app on their phone. It can range from 1-100, with a higher score meaning the body shows fewer physical signs of stress. The score is also supplemented with recommendations for coping with stress, such as breathing exercises and other mindfulness tools. All Fitbit Premium subscribers get a detailed overview of the score calculation, which is made up of more than 10 biometric inputs, including exertion balance (activity impact), sensitivity (heart rate, heart rate variability and electrodermal activity from EDA Scan) and sleep patterns ( sleep quality).

All Fitbit users can look forward to a new mindfulness tile in the Fitbit app on their phone. In it, they set weekly mindfulness goals and notifications, can assess their stress and record how they feel after individual exercises. There will also be the possibility of meditation as part of a good mindfulness practice. On offer is a premium selection of over 100 meditation sessions from popular brands such as Aura, Breathe a That Percent Happier and the option to listen to countless relaxing sounds from Fitbit. All this will make it possible to monitor the long-term effect of exercise on the overall mood.

"Regular meditation has both physical and emotional benefits, from reducing stress and symptoms of anxiety and depression to improving cardiovascular health, such as blood pressure and heart rate," said Dr. Helen Weng, assistant professor of psychiatry at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. “Meditation is an exercise for the mind. Like physical exercise, it takes consistent practice to cultivate mental capacity. Finding the right meditation practice is important to building long-term health benefits. Fitbit can help with this thanks to new tools such as Stress Management Score, EDA sensor and mindfulness exercises. This way, progress can be easily monitored and a personalized meditation practice can be built that works and is sustainable.”

Understanding and working with heart health

Fitbit Sense takes advantage of the latest innovations in heart health. It has been a pioneer in this since 2014, when it offered the world the first 24/7 heart rate measurement. The latest innovation so far was the introduction of the Hotspot Minutes feature earlier this year. Fitbit Sense is the company's first device with an ECG app that analyzes heart rhythm and can detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). It is a disease that affects more than 33,5 million people worldwide. To measure, just press the stainless steel frame with your fingers for 30 seconds, then the user will get valuable information that can be immediately downloaded and shared with your doctor.

Fitbit's new technology called PurePulse 2.0 with a new multi-channel heart rate sensor and updated algorithm brings the most advanced heart rate measurement technology to date. It also takes care of another important heart health function – personalized high and low heart rate notifications right on the device. With continuous heart rate monitoring, Fitbit Sense is able to easily detect these conditions and immediately alert the owner if the heart rate falls outside the thresholds. Although heart rate is affected by many factors such as stress or temperature, a high or low heart rate can be a sign of heart disease that requires medical attention. It can be, for example, bradycardia (very slow heart rate) or, conversely, tachycardia (too fast heart rate).

Key health metrics for better wellness

In addition to the ability to detect heart problems such as fibrillation, Fitbit integrates new health metrics that can help detect trends and changes in overall health Fitbit Sense adds a new body temperature sensor to detect changes that can be a telltale sign of fever, illness, or the onset of menstruation. Unlike a one-time temperature measurement, the Fitbit Sense sensor tracks skin temperature fluctuations throughout the night and can record a long-term trend. The watch thus easily recognizes any deviations from the normal state.

The new interface for Fitbit Premium goes a little further, helping to monitor your respiratory rate (average number of breaths per minute), resting heart rate (an important indicator of cardiovascular health), heart rate variability (variation in the time between each heart contraction) and skin temperature fluctuations (on Fitbit Sense watches measured with a dedicated sensor and on other Fitbit devices using the original set of sensors). All Fitbit Premium members with a compatible device will see these new daily metrics as well as long-term trends to reveal any changes in health. Owners of Fitbit devices from the range of smart watches can also look forward to an overview of blood oxygenation during sleep. A series of dials is also prepared, showing both the extent of oxygenation during the last night and the total nightly average. Additionally, Fitbit Premium members can track blood oxygenation trends over time in the Health Metrics tab to reveal signs of important changes in fitness and health.

Early findings from our study on COVID-19 suggest that changes in some of the metrics included in the new Fitbit Premium interface, such as respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability, may coincide with the onset of COVID-19 symptoms and in some cases even earlier.

“Wearable electronics can play an important role in detecting infectious diseases by acting as an early warning system for our bodies. This is critical not only for slowing the spread of COVID-19, but also for better understanding disease progression,” says Eric Friedman, co-founder and CTO of Fitbit. “To date, over 100 of our users have joined the study and we have found that we can detect almost 000 percent of new cases of COVID-50 the day before the onset of symptoms with a 19 percent success rate. This research holds so much promise to help us understand the disease of COVID-70 and detect it as early as possible. But at the same time, it can also become a model for detecting other diseases and health problems in the future."
