Yesterday, after months of speculation, Fitbit unveiled its first smartwatch, targeting a segment currently dominated by the Apple Watch. The newly introduced Fitbit Ionic watch is supposed to be primarily focused on the fitness functions and health of its owners. The watch should include functions that are said not to be available in any other similar device until now…

The specs sound promising indeed. The watch is dominated by a square screen with a brightness of up to 1000 nits, a fine resolution and a Gorilla Glass cover layer. Inside there is a large number of sensors, which include a built-in full-fledged GPS module (with alleged excellent accuracy, thanks to a special construction), a sensor for reading heart activity (along with an SpO2 sensor for estimating blood oxygen levels), a three-axis accelerometer, a digital compass, an altimeter, ambient light sensor and vibration motor. The watch will also offer water resistance up to 50 meters.

As for other specifications, the watch will offer 2,5 GB of built-in memory, on which it will be possible to store songs, GPS records of physical activity, etc. The watch also has an NFC chip for paying with the Fitbit Pay service. Communication with your smartphone and bridging for all notifications is also a matter of course.

Other highlights include automatic run detection, a personal trainer app, automatic sleep detection, and more. Despite all these goodies, the Fitbit Ionic watch should last about 4 days of use. However, this time will be significantly reduced if the user really uses it to the full. If we are talking about permanent GPS scanning, playing music and a few other functions in the background, the endurance drops to only about 10 hours.

As for pricing, the watch is currently available for pre-order at a price of $299. Availability in stores should be during October, but more likely in November. Next year, customers should expect a special edition, which Adidas collaborated on.
