Apple has released a new firmware version for AirPods Pro and AirPods 3rd generation. And even if there are no known news that the new build will bring, it is of course advisable to have their system as up-to-date as possible. After all, Apple states this for all its systems. But how to find out the current firmware and how to update to the latest one?

The last time AirPods, AirPods Pro, Airpods Max, as well as Beats Solo Pro, Powerbeats 4 and Powerbeats Pro headphones were updated more than a month ago, when their 4A400 version brought, apart from performance improvements and bug fixes, two new features. These included better support for the Find platform and the AirPods Pro model also received the Conversation Boost function. Don't expect such big news this time, it's more about further optimization of performance, and above all Apple's correction of known errors. AirPods Pro receive firmware 4A402, AirPods 3rd generation then the one marked 4B66.

How to find out the firmware designation of AirPods

  • Open on your iPhone paired with AirPods Settings.

  • Find your AirPods in the list of devices.
  • Tap the "i" icon, which is located on the right next to the headphone connection information.
  • Here you can already find information about the firmware version.

How to update to a new version of AirPods firmware

If you don't see the latest firmware version of the headset following the above procedure, it means it hasn't been installed yet. Unfortunately, Apple does not offer any option to manually invoke this installation, as it is done automatically. So if you don't see the latest designation yet, you can practically just wait. In any case, the update will take place when the headphones are in their charging case and connected to the device. So if you currently have them in your ears and want to update their firmware, try storing them in their case for a while.
