Michal Marek About the FDb.cz application they already wrote once. But it's been almost two years and a lot has changed since our first review. The app has come a long way and has gotten rid of most childhood illnesses. It underwent a rapid redesign, became clearer and still retained all its practical functions. If you are not familiar with FDb.cz, it is a practical application that elegantly combines a film database (equivalent to the American IMDb), TV programs and cinema programs. Considering that there really aren't many such complex apps in the App Store, it's worth giving it some attention.
After opening the application, you will be greeted by the initial screen, which gives a kind of overview and also in a way summarizes the capabilities of the application. We will find sections here TV tips, Now on DVD, The BEST movies a NEJ series, where each section can be "clicked" to display more content. Above the content of the start screen, we will find a search field, which can be used to search for movies or celebrities in an extensive database. However, if you want to use the application to the fullest, the side pull-out menu, which contains all the functions of the application, will be crucial for you.
TV program
The offer is divided into four parts. She is the first one TV programs, which is processed really thoroughly and the user has many options to use and browse it. The first option is to choose a subsection It's running now. It contains a clear list of currently broadcast programs including a graphic representation of their progress and a list of the next two programs. Your favorite stations are at the top of the list and the others below. In addition, you can apply various smart filters to the list, which will show you, for example, only basic Czech, music, sports or news channels.
Another alternative is a classic TV program, which simply displays a list of programs on the relevant program for 5 days in advance. Shows can also be viewed on a fancy timeline that ranks your favorite channels below each other. Another menu is used to configure favorite stations. You can also manually search the TV program, view TV tips and manage alerts. The application supports push notifications and can alert you to your favorite shows, movies and the like.
For a TV program, the integration of that movie database is really an extraordinary advantage. You can find out a lot of interesting information about each film or series directly in the application. In the overview, you will find the annotation, the creator of the given show, the cast and possibly user ratings.
Cinema programs
In the next part of the pull-down menu, you will find cinema programs. These can also be displayed in several ways. The first one is the display by regions (regions), you can also search for cinemas in your area and you can also display a list of your favorite cinemas that you previously marked with a star. A list of currently showing films is also available.
Cinema programs are very successful in any of the aforementioned views, and of course this section also benefits greatly from the benefits of linking to the movie database. However, various above-standard functions are also positive, such as simply adding a movie to the system calendar or quickly obtaining a route to a given cinema.
Movie database and settings
The last group of functions is related to FDb.cz as a film database. In the application, you can find rankings of movies and series, and you can even sort the list by category. This is a very handy feature, because a simple list of Hollywood blockbusters is not always what we are looking for. Sometimes it's definitely useful to filter out the best children's movies, the best documentaries, book adaptations, and the like. In addition to the classic rankings of movies according to their rating, movies can also be sorted according to their popularity among users and according to other criteria such as the number of comments on their page, the number of photos assigned to them, etc.
The application also thinks about DVD and Blue-ray fans. The user can easily find out which movies are currently on sale on these media. Of course, you will find all relevant information about the given film in the application, such as its annotation, rating, cast, image gallery or proof of the film's website.
In addition to the above, you will find another item in the menu Login. It is not necessary to log into the application, but you cannot rate movies or synchronize favorite stations between devices without it. You can sign up via e-mail or using Facebook. The application also has a separate setting, in which you can set, for example, whether you want to be notified of TV shows and the cinema you have planned with a classic push notification, or whether you would rather add such events to your calendar.
Verdict
FDb.cz has gone through really big changes over the past two years and we can say without hesitation that it is a successful application. A big advantage is the complexity and interlinking of individual functions with the movie database. The menu is somewhat more complex and there are many functions, but at least each user can choose what they will use the application for, what display style they prefer, and so on. There is practically nothing to criticize about the design, and the great news is that the application is also optimized for the iPad, on whose larger display, TV programs are, of course, even more practical and clear. Don't you know, there is no way to set it up so that the screen with the TV program is shown immediately upon startup. I don't use this app for that. It bothers me that I want a TV program, but I still have to select which screen I want to show in the list. It would be nice if you could preset one as the default.
