One app to rule them all? That's certainly not the plan for Facebook and its app ecosystem, as evidenced by the latest move the social network plans to make in the coming weeks. For a long time, Facebook messaging was split between two apps – the main app and Facebook Messenger. The company now wants to completely cancel chat in the main application and establish Messenger as the only official client. It will happen in the next few weeks.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed the move: "In order for people to continue to send messages on mobile devices, they will need to install the Messenger app." Facebook's decision is justified as follows: "We found that people respond 20 percent faster in the Messenger app than in Facebook." The company also didn't want to split the time users spend chatting on Facebook between two apps, preferring to leave everything to one dedicated app.

For writing messages, the social network will have two main applications, in addition to Messenger, WhatsApp, which this year bought for $19 billion. However, according to the company, the services do not compete with each other. He perceives WhatsApp more like a substitute for SMS, while Facebook Chat works like instant messaging. The whole move will undoubtedly cause controversy, after all, like a number of other changes that the social network has introduced during its time.
