In the IT world, TikTok and its possible ban in the United States have been constantly discussed in recent days. Due to the fact that this topic is really hot, it is unfortunately forgotten about the other news and messages that come daily. So you won't find a single mention of TikTok in today's IT roundup. Instead, we'll take a look at Facebook Lite's shutdown, Instagram's accusations of illegally collecting user biometric data, and finally we'll talk more about what's new from Waze and Dropbox. Let's get straight to the point.

The Facebook Lite app is ending

If you wanted to install Facebook on your mobile smart device, you had the option of choosing from two applications. The first choice is the classic application called Facebook, which most of us have installed, the second choice was the Facebook Lite application, which was intended for older devices with low performance that were not able to run the classic Facebook application smoothly. In addition, Facebook Lite was able to work even in locations with weak signal coverage, as it loaded images in very low quality and at the same time did not support automatic video playback. For the first time ever, Facebook Lite appeared in 2018 for Turkey, alongside Messenger Lite. Later, this application reached other countries, where it was mainly used by users with older and weaker phones. Today, some Facebook Lite users, specifically Brazilian users, received a notification informing them of the termination of this application. You can make sure of the termination yourself - unlike Messenger Lite, you simply cannot find Facebook Lite in the App Store anymore. For comparison, the classic Facebook application is about 250 MB in size, Facebook Lite was then managed to squeeze into a 9 MB package.

Instagram is accused of illegally collecting users' biometric data

If you are among the users of social networks, you surely know at least a little about them. Above all, you should know that Instagram, together with, for example, WhatsApp, belongs to the empire called Facebook. At the same time, you must have noticed information in the past about the unfair ways in which Facebook often deals with the data of its users. In the past, we have already witnessed the sale of various user data, there have also been several leaks and many other situations in which your user data could easily have figured in as well. Last month, Facebook was accused of illegally collecting users' biometric data from the Facebook app. The company has offered $650 million in compensation, but it is not yet clear if that amount will be enough.

At the beginning of this week, the company Facebook was accused in practically the same way, that is, of collecting biometric data, but this time within the Instagram application. Allegedly, Facebook should have illegally used the data of up to 100 million users of this social network for its own profit. None of these users were informed about the data collection, nor did they give Facebook permission to collect and use the data. Allegedly, Facebook has been abusing user data from Instagram in a similar way since the beginning of this year. Facebook declined to comment on the situation. As more information becomes available, you'll be sure to hear about it in one of our future recaps.

Waze expands railroad crossing notifications to more states

If you have a navigation application installed on your iPhone, it is probably Waze. This application is very popular among users, mainly due to the fact that here drivers create a kind of their own social network, with the help of which they can alert themselves in real time about police patrols, dangers on the road and more. The Waze application, which belongs to Google, is constantly being improved, and as part of the latest update, we saw an expansion of the database of railway crossings that the application can alert you to. In the Czech Republic, the database of railway crossings has been available for a long time, as part of the latest update, information on railway crossings was added to the United Kingdom, Italy, Israel, Mexico and other countries. You can activate alerts for railway crossings in Settings -> Map view -> Notifications -> Railway crossing.

Dropbox introduced new features for iPhone and Mac

Cloud services are becoming more and more popular these days. iCloud is available for Apple users, but it is certainly not the case that they must use it because it is from Apple. Some individuals use, for example, Google Drive or Dropbox. If you are a Dropbox user, I have great news for you. This is because new functions will soon arrive in this application, which are already available as part of beta testing. Specifically, these are Dropbox Passwords, Dropbox Vault and Dropbox Backup features. Dropbox Passwords is used to store and manage passwords across websites and user accounts (similar to 1Password). Dropbox Vault is a feature that allows users to create an additional layer of security on certain files using a PIN, and Dropbox Backup is then used to automatically back up selected folders on a Mac or PC. All these features should be available to the public soon.
