Yesterday, Apple introduced a trio of new Apple watches - Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2 and the brand new Apple Watch Ultra for the most demanding Apple watchers. The new generations bring with them a number of interesting novelties and overall move the apple watch segment a few steps ahead. At the presentation of the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple surprised us with a rather interesting novelty. He introduced low power mode, which is supposed to extend the life of the Series 8 from the usual 18 hours to up to 36 hours.

With its functionality and appearance, the mode is extremely similar to the function of the same name from iOS, which can noticeably extend the life of our iPhones. However, Apple users began to speculate whether the novelty will only be available on the new generation watches, or if earlier models will not receive it by chance. And exactly in this respect, Apple pleased us. The mode is part of the expected watchOS 9 operating system, which you will install on Apple Watch Series 4 and later. So if you own an older "Watchky" you're in luck.

Low Power Mode in watchOS 9

The goal of the low power mode is, of course, to extend the life of the Apple Watch on a single charge. It does this by turning off selected features and services that would otherwise consume power. According to the official description of the Cupertino giant, selected sensors and functions will be turned off or limited, including, for example, an always-on display, automatic exercise detection, notifications informing about heart activity and others. On the other hand, gadgets such as measurement of sports activities or fall detection will continue to be available. Unfortunately, Apple has not revealed any more detailed information. So we have no choice but to wait until the official release of the watchOS 9 operating system and the first tests, which could give us a better overview of all the limitations of the new low power mode.

At the same time, we must not forget to mention another rather important thing. The newly introduced low-power mode is completely new and works independently of the already existing Power Reserve mode, which on the other hand turns off all the functionality of the Apple Watch and leaves the user with only the current time displayed. Of course, this mode is also just one of several novelties that were announced in connection with the Apple Watch Series 8. If you have fallen for the new apple watch, then you can look forward to a sensor for measuring body temperature, a function to detect a car accident and much more.

When will low power mode be available?

Finally, let's shed some light on when the low power mode will actually be available for the Apple Watch. On the occasion of the traditional September keynote, Apple Event also revealed when it plans to release the expected operating systems to the public. iOS 16 and watchOS 9 will be available on September 12. We will only have to wait for iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura. They will probably come later in the fall. Unfortunately, they did not specify a closer date.
