It's only February, but we've already got a lot of information about what the new iPhone 16 (Pro) will be able to do and what possible new features they will come with. There is speculation about larger displays, a smaller Dynamic Island, but also another button. What will it be used for and will we actually use it?

It's still a long time until September, when the iPhone 16 will be officially introduced to the world. But it is certain that WWDC24 at the beginning of June will show the first glimpse of what they will be able to do. There, Apple will present iOS 18, which the new iPhones will include right out of the box. It is this system that should bring Apple's artificial intelligence to iPhones in order to keep up with the competition. Its biggest rival, Samsung, introduced its Galaxy S24 series in January and offered its concept of AI in the form of "Galaxy AI".

Action button

With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple came up with a new control element. We lost the volume rocker and got the Action button. This can still work the same when you activate silent mode on the device by holding it for a long time. But there is more to it. This is because you can map it for many other functions, as well as a number of shortcuts (so, in theory, for anything). With the future series of iPhones, the button should also move between the basic models, i.e. the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. But the Action button is nothing new. However, Apple is to add one more unique button to future iPhones, which again only Pro models will have.

Capture Button

Action button, volume buttons and power button add one more. This is supposed to be well below the last one mentioned, and according to the information so far, it is not entirely clear whether it is supposed to be mechanical or sensory. In the first case, it will have the same shape as the fastener, in the second case, it will not protrude above the surface of the frame.

This button is set to change the way you take photos and videos on iPhones forever. When turning the iPhone to landscape, when the Dynamic Island is on the left, you will have the button directly under the index finger. So Apple will try to reinvent the wheel. Of course, we know a similar button from classic photographic equipment or even old mobile phones, especially those from Sony Ericsson.

Its main function should be that you press it to take a recording - either a photo or a video. But then there is also room for focus. It was the old cell phones that had two-position camera buttons, where you pressed it to focus and pressed it all the way down to capture the footage. This is exactly what the new button could do.

An interesting theory is the one regarding gestures. Whether the button is mechanical or tactile, it should respond to how you move your finger over it. That's also why it will be wider as a power button than the Action button is now. Moving your finger from side to side of the button would allow you, for example, more detailed zoom control, which is especially useful for video.
