Today, a very interesting news about draft of a new law from the EU, according to which the iOS operating system should be significantly opened up - in theory, we could easily wait for voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to arrive in our iPhones. According to available sources, the aforementioned draft law on digital markets was supposed to leak, thanks to which we can get a glimpse of what the EU intends in this direction.

It is no secret that the EU has been trying for a long time to bring some kind of balance not only to the mobile phone market, but practically everywhere. In mobile phones, everyone probably remembers her campaign to introduce a standardized USB-C connector. This brings a number of advantages (speed, possibilities, openness, widespread use) that it might not be harmful if every suitable device had this port. In theory, this could minimize the amount of waste (due to different power adapters), and also individual users could enjoy the fact that one cable is enough for practically all devices.

But let's go back to the current bill. According to him, electronics manufacturers would not be able to force individual developers to use their own browser solutions (in Apple's case it is WebKit), while the unification of communicators is similarly mentioned and, in the last point, significant openness in the field of voice assistants, which of course mainly concerns Apple . The latter offers Siri as part of its operating systems and there is no way to start using a competing assistant. But if this proposal were to pass, the option would be here - and not only here, but also the other way around, i.e. in the case of Siri on devices with the Android operating system.

What changes would the opening of voice assistants bring?

For us apple growers, it is absolutely essential what changes the coming of a similar law would actually bring us. Although Apple is very well known for its closedness when it comes to its operating systems and software, such openness might not be completely harmful for the average user. In this regard, we mainly mean the smart home. Unfortunately, Apple products only work with the Apple HomeKit home. But there are plenty of smart products on the market that aren't HomeKit compatible and instead rely on Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. If we had these assistants at our disposal, we could build our smart homes in a completely different way, without having to take HomeKit into account.

The question of language is also quite important. In the case of Siri, the arrival of the Czech language has been discussed for years, but for now it is out of sight. Unfortunately, we would not improve much in this direction. Neither Amazon Alexa nor Google Assistant support Czech, at least for now. On the other hand, greater openness could paradoxically help Apple. The Californian giant is often criticized for the fact that Siri is significantly behind the competition. If direct competition appeared, it might motivate the company to accelerate development.

Will we see these changes?

It is necessary to approach the leaked bill with more caution. This is just a "proposal" and it is not at all clear whether it will ever enter into force, or whether it is actually being worked on. If so, we still have plenty of time. Similar legislative changes of such dimensions cannot be solved overnight, in fact, on the contrary. In addition, their subsequent introduction will also take a considerable amount of time.
