Emoji icons are different smileys or pictures, which the Japanese are used to putting in their text messages. The iPhone 3G without emoji icons had no chance in Japan, so Apple had to build Emoji icons into firmware 2.2. But only iPhone users in Japan got the option to turn on Emoji, and some users elsewhere in the world didn't want to put up with it.

I am writing this article in its third revision, because the situation around this topic is constantly changing. But one thing is still the same. Sometimes there is an application on the Appstore that can unblock Emoji, so that everyone can try these icons. This option first appeared with the arrival of a Japanese RSS reader, which, probably by mistake, enabled this option even for users not using a Japanese phone operator. But this application was paid.

One developer caught on to this and researched what makes this Emoji app turn on. After finding out, he created an application only for turning on Emoji icons and wanted to publish it for free on the Appstore, but this one the app has not been approved by Apple. So at least he left a downloadable code on his website to enable Emoji on every phone, and the developer battle with Apple began. Everyone was sending some app that either more or less successfully turned on Emoji on the iPhone.

It already looked like Apple had given up the fight when it released the EmotiFun! app, which served just those purposes. But today it disappeared from the Appstore. However, there are still some applications on the Appstore, such as the application Spell Number (iTunes link), which is free (thanks Petr R. for the tip!). This application is originally used so that if you write a number through the dial pad, the application will tell you how to say this number in English.

The trick is as follows. Spell Number works by entering the number "9876543.21" to unlock the ability to use Emoji. After that, it's enough turn on Emoji support in settings iPhone. Open Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> scroll down to the Japanese keyboard and click on it -> here just switch Emoji to ON. When writing messages, just click the globe icon next to the space on the keyboard and Emoji icons will appear! Also, don't overlook that each Emoji icon tab has several pages as well!

After activation, of course, you can delete Spell Number so that it does not interfere with your phone. In this state, however, Emoji are quite useless. If you send a message to someone, it will only be displayed correctly if they have an iPhone and have Emoji turned on. But with the iPhone we can do one more thing and that's about it! :)
