One of the most interesting novelties of the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR presented yesterday is undoubtedly the DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby) mode. This is support for two SIM cards, but not in the form we are used to from other manufacturers. Instead of adding a second slot for a nano-SIM card, Apple enriched the phone with an eSIM, i.e. a built-in SIM directly in the phone in the form of a chip that contains a digital imprint of the contents of the classic SIM card. The problem, however, lies in eSIM support by operators, but it seems that Czech customers will soon be able to use Dual SIM mode in the iPhone.

With the arrival of the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, Apple updated its website and added section with a list of all country operators where eSIM is supported. Surprisingly, the Czech Republic is also not missing here. In the domestic market, eSIM will initially be supported by T-Mobile, which has been testing the technology since last year. When other operators will join it is still a question. We have contacted the other two operators and are waiting for their comments. As soon as we receive an answer, we will update the article.

The Czech operator's eSIM support also lit a glimmer of hope that a cellular version of the Apple Watch will arrive on the domestic market. Apple watches also have an eSIM, and in their case this is the only way to use mobile data and receive calls and SMS on the watch. However, even with the arrival of the new Apple Watch Series 4, Apple did not start selling the cellular version in the Czech Republic, and only the GPS model is still available.

Dual SIM only later in the year

In addition to the above, we are on Site Apple has also learned that Dual SIM support will not initially be available on the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. Apple will only activate the function later in the year, through one of the iOS 12 updates. A question mark hangs over the question of when exactly we will see the promised update. It seems most likely that the DSDS mode will come together with iOS 12.1, which Apple should release in late October or late November.

When using two SIMs, the iPhone will be able to make and receive calls as well as SMS and MMS messages. Only the connection to the mobile Internet will be limited, when only one plan can be used in real time. This means, among other things, that if the user is currently making a call, in the event of an incoming call to the other number, he will be reported as unavailable to the caller.

A new section will also be added to the iOS 12 settings on new iPhones for choosing a default number and naming both plans according to your needs. According to Apple, it will be easy to switch between numbers and choose from which number the call will be initiated.

In China, where eSIMs are banned, Apple will offer special versions of the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, which will have a new SIM slot with support for two physical SIM cards.
