The design of the Apple Watch has been practically untouched since the zero generation. The Apple Watch therefore keeps the same shape all the time and thus preserves the square dial, which has proven itself great and simply works. However, the competition has a slightly different view of it. On the other hand, we often come across smart watches with round dials in other models. They practically copy the appearance of classic analog watches. Although there have been several talks in the past about the possible arrival of a round Apple Watch, the Cupertino giant still hasn't decided on this step, and probably won't.
The current form of the Apple Watch has a number of indisputable benefits that it would be a shame to lose. Of course, we can also look at the whole thing from the opposite side and directly perceive the negatives of the round design. In this article, we will therefore focus on why we are unlikely to see a round Apple Watch and why.
Why Apple is keeping the current design
So let's shed some light on why Apple is sticking with the current design. As we mentioned in the beginning, the round dial is quite typical for competing smart watches. We can also see it perfectly on the main competitor Apple Watch, or on the Samsung Galaxy Watch. At first glance, the round design may seem perfect. In this case, the watch looks aesthetic and decent, which in itself comes from the habit of analog models. Unfortunately, in the world of smartwatches, this also comes with a number of negatives. Specifically, we lose a lot of space in the form of a display, which could otherwise display a number of important information.
Looking at the dial alone, we may not notice it. However, smart watches as such are not only used to display the time, on the contrary. We can install a number of smart applications in them, for which the display is absolutely key. And it is precisely in this respect that the round models collide, while the Apple Watch takes a completely dominant position. After all, this is also confirmed by the users themselves. On discussion forums, Galaxy Watch users highlight its design, but criticize the use of the watch in the case of some applications. Not only is the available space limited, but at the same time it is necessary for the developers to concentrate the main elements in the center, where there is naturally the most space. This can again bring more negatives than positives - with a bad design of the user interface, some elements may be lost or may not appear completely natural.
Are round smartwatches wrong?
Logically, therefore, a rather interesting question is offered. Are round smartwatches wrong? Although at first glance their characteristics, which stem from the use of a round dial, may appear negative, it is necessary to look at the whole situation from both sides. In the end, it depends on the preferences of each specific user. In short, for some, this design is key, and in such cases it can make up for the missing edges of the screen, as a round dial is simply a priority for them.
This is also related to the debate about whether we will ever see such a smartwatch from the apple company's workshop. As we mentioned above, although there have been several such speculations in the past, the development of a round Apple Watch seems unlikely for now. Apple continues the established trend. During the last eight years, the current proposal has more than proven itself and it can be said that it simply works. Would you like an Apple Watch with a round display, or are you comfortable with the current look?
One of the two main reasons I don't have an AW, but a Garmin Marq, is the design. The look of the baby box really doesn't look very elegant to me, and it's not ideal for hand and wrist movement at all. I wouldn't argue with Apple about the loss of space on the display. For example, widgets in iOS are a huge waste of space. Adapting apps to a round or rectangular display is just a matter of design and effort. For example, when navigating, I am interested in the area around me on the map. I prefer to see analog hands on the display rather than a number. But all this is a matter of taste for each of us. For me, AWs aren't really.
