In 2021, Apple expanded its line of Macs with the M1 chip to include the expected iMac, which also received a fairly major redesign. After a long time, apple growers got a brand new design. In this case, the Cupertino giant experimented a bit, as it went from professional minimalism to vivid colors, which gives the device itself a completely different dimension. The incredible thinness of the device itself is also a huge change. Apple was able to do this thanks to the switch to the M1 chip from the Apple Silicon series. The chipset is significantly smaller, thanks to which all the components with the motherboard fit into a small area. In addition, the 3,5 mm audio connector is located on the side - it could not be from the front or back, as the connector is larger than the entire thickness of the device.

Thanks to the new design and great performance, the 24″ iMac (2021) has received a decent amount of popularity. It is still an extremely popular device, especially for households or offices, as it offers everything users may need in terms of price/performance. On the other hand, this Mac is not flawless. On the contrary, it has had to deal with sharp design criticism since its launch. Apple growers are particularly bothered by one element - a stretched "chin", which really doesn't look quite ideal.

Chin issue with iMac

In fact, this element has a rather important role. It is in the places where that chin is located that all the components are hidden together with the motherboard. The space behind the display, on the other hand, is completely empty and serves only for the needs of the screen, thanks to which, after all, Apple was able to achieve the aforementioned thinness. But that doesn't mean that apple lovers would prefer to see it differently. Quite a lot of users would welcome a different approach – a 24″ iMac without a chin, but with a little more thickness. Moreover, such a thing is not at all unrealistic. Io Technology knows about this, and they published a video of their modified iMac with a significantly nicer design on the Shanghai video portal Bilibili.

The 24" iMac (2021) is incredibly thin

The video depicts the entire modification process and shows what Apple could have done differently and better. As a result, they present the finished 24″ iMac with the M1 (2021) chip, which looks many times better without the aforementioned chin. Of course, this takes its toll. The bottom part is slightly thicker because of this, which makes sense given the need to store the components. This change thus opens another discussion among apple growers. Is it better to have a thin iMac with a chin, or is a slightly thicker model a far better alternative? Of course, design is a subjective topic and everyone has to find the answer for themselves. But the truth is that fans tend to agree on the alternative version from Io Technology.

It is therefore a question whether Apple itself will decide to make the same change. There is still a chance for possible rework. The Cupertino giant has recently changed its approach to design as such. While years ago he tried to build his Macs on how thin they were, now he sees it differently. Thin bodies often caused problems with cooling and thus overheating. Apple showed that it is not afraid to take a step back with the arrival of the redesigned MacBook Pro (2021), which is a little rougher thanks to the return of some ports. Would you welcome the mentioned change in the case of the iMac as well?
