At the end of this year, an acquisition took place in the film and television industry that will go down in history. The Walt Disney Company announced today in an official statement that it is buying a majority stake in 21st Century Fox and its affiliated entities. This is really a massive shift that will affect a huge part of the industry, be it classic action movies, serial production, as well as news and internet streaming video content.

There has been speculation about this acquisition for a few weeks, and basically we were just waiting to see if it would be confirmed this year, or if Disney's representatives would keep it until next year. With this purchase, the Walt Disney Company acquired the entire 21st Century Fox studio, which includes the 20th Century Fox film and television studio, the Fox cable station and all its affiliated channels, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000. With this acquisition, such brands fell under the Disney wing , such as Avatar, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Deadpool or even the series The Simpsons and Futurama.

These brands also now belong to the Walt Disney Company (photo by Gizmodo):

The purchase also gave Disney a 30% stake in the streaming company Hulu, which it now has a comfortable majority in and can essentially control directly. It is not a very popular solution in the Czech Republic, but in the United States it is doing relatively well (over 32 million subscribers).

This acquisition greatly expanded Disney's portfolio, which now has access to basically every branch of the entertainment industry, including some really strong brands such as The Simpsons, Futurama, X-Files, Star Wars, Marvel comic book heroes, and much more ( you can find a complete list of what's new under Disney here). It is clear that the company will try to break into the global market with the newly acquired brands and will most likely use the Hulu service to do so, which should take care of quality content after this acquisition. We will see how this purchase (if at all) affects us.
