The Accident Detection feature is one of the new iPhones 14. It simply means that when the device detects a serious car accident, it can help you contact emergency services and notify emergency contacts. But it doesn't work perfectly. On the other hand, isn't it better to call a hundred times unnecessarily and actually save a life the first time?

Accident Detection is still relatively lively. At first, the function called the emergency lines only when the owners of the new iPhones were enjoying themselves on the mountain railways, then also in the case of skiing. This is likely because high speed and hard braking will be judged by the feature's algorithms as a car accident. Logically, it follows that emergency lines are burdened with unnecessary reports.

She is certainly interesting statistics, when the Kita-Alps Fire Department in Nagano, Japan, said it received 16 hoax calls between December 23 and January 134, "mostly" from iPhone 14s. that is, fake iPhones represent more than a tenth of them.

How Accident Detection works

When iPhone 14 detects a serious car accident, it displays an alert and automatically initiates an emergency call after 20 seconds (unless you cancel it). If you don't respond, the iPhone will play an audio message to the emergency services informing them that you have been involved in a serious accident and give them your longitude and latitude with the approximate size of the search radius.

On the one hand, we have an unnecessary burden on the components of the integrated rescue system, but on the other hand, the fact that this function can really save human lives. Last news for example, they talk about the rescue of four people after their traffic accident, when the iPhone 14 of one of them automatically informed the emergency services using the Accident Detection function.

Earlier in December, there was an accident in California, USA, where a car fell off the road into a deep canyon, in an area without mobile coverage. An iPhone 14 belonging to one of the passengers not only triggered crash detection, but also immediately used the emergency SOS function via satellite to make an emergency call. You can watch the recording of the rescue operation above.

A controversial question

It is evident that the number of unnecessary function calls from the iPhone 14 is straining the emergency lines. But isn't it better to call unnecessarily than not to call at all and lose a human life in the process? Anyone with an iPhone 14 who has the feature enabled can check their phone after any drop or questionable situation to make sure an emergency call hasn't been made.

If so, it's generally recommended to call back and let the operator know you're okay. It's definitely better than doing nothing and even more so wasting resources saving someone who doesn't need it at all. Apple is still working on the feature and it goes without saying that they will try to fine-tune it even more.
