Apple introduced its iPhone 14 and with them the unique, unique and long-speculated function of emergency SOS, which communicates through satellites and not the classic operator network and Wi-Fi connection. But how does it all work?

Meaning of functioning

Satellite connectivity with iPhone 14 will be available when you're out of range of Wi-Fi or cellular and need to send an emergency message. However, Apple noted about the feature that it was developed for use in open spaces with a clear view of the sky, typically vast deserts and bodies of water. Connection performance may be affected by cloudy skies, trees, or even mountains.

Connection access

Of course, the satellite connection feature requires you to connect to one as well. When the iPhone starts the application, it will display a search, when you turn to more precisely direct yourself to the nearest one and select it.

Communication options

The function is not used to make calls, but only to send emergency SOS messages. You won't even handle love correspondence through it or ask what's for dinner when you get home. The app will actually present you with a series of questions before sending a message to assess your situation, and this information will be sent to emergency services once your satellite connection is active. Here, Apple created a unique compression algorithm that makes messages three times smaller in order to speed up communication as much as possible. It says that if you have a clear view of the sky, the message should be sent within 15 seconds, but if your view is obstructed, it could take several minutes.

Detection of shocks, falls and Find

The iPhone 14 has a new accelerometer and gyroscope that can detect traffic accidents as well as falls by measuring G-forces. Crash Detection is linked to an emergency satellite, which then sends out a request for help. Through the satellite connection, your location can also be shared if you are out of coverage and Wi-Fi range, that is, typically if you are going somewhere in the real "wilderness".

Globalstar

For the satellite connection feature, Apple is working with Globalstar, which will become Apple's official satellite operator and allocate 85% of its current and future network capacity to support its current new and, of course, all future iPhones. Contract between the companies, it also states that Globalstar will provide and maintain all resources, including personnel, software, satellite systems and more, and will adhere to minimum quality and coverage standards.

Price and availability

Apple didn't provide any pricing information, but did mention that all iPhone 14 owners will get two years of free satellite data. That is, at least all users in the US and Canada. But it is true that this also applies to us if we will travel to those places with our iPhone 14 and we did not buy it in China, because emergency satellite calling is not supported there. However, Apple still adds that SOS via satellite may not work in places above 62° latitude, i.e. in the northern parts of Canada and Alaska. The function itself is to be launched in November this year.
