The watchOS 9 operating system brought a number of rather interesting novelties that will especially please passionate athletes. Apple really made a point this year and generally received very positive reviews. A large part of the news focuses directly on sports. And there are certainly not a few of them. So let's take a look at all the new features for athletes.

New display during exercise

The very basis of the sports functions in watchOS 9 is the expanded display of information during the exercise itself. So far, the Apple Watch does not give us much information and only informs us about the distance, burnt categories and time. Considering the capabilities of the watch itself, there is unfortunately not much. This is precisely why these options are finally being expanded - by turning the digital crown, apple watchers will be able to change individual views and view a range of additional data. You can easily switch between activity rings, heart rate zones, power and elevation.

Apple Watch can now inform about the intensity levels of exercise, which will be used by the so-called Heart Rate Zones function. These are calculated automatically based on the health data of each user, so they are completely personalized in all cases. An alternative option is to create them completely manually and according to your own needs.

Closely related to this is the new option for editing the user's exercises (workouts). In watchOS 9, it will therefore be possible to customize individual workouts to suit the style of the apple lover. The watch then informs via notifications about speed, heart rate, cadence and performance. So in practice it works as a great collaboration between the watch itself and the user.

Challenge yourself

For many athletes, the biggest motivation is to surpass yourself. Apple is now also betting on this, which is why watchOS 9 brings two more interesting innovations that can help you with something similar. That is why you can now count on immediate feedback informing you of your speed when running or walking, with which the watch will let you know whether you can meet the previously set goal at the current pace. It is extremely important to keep up with yourself and not slack off for a moment, which the new watchOS 9 will greatly help with.

A similar novelty is the possibility to practically challenge yourself on the same route in outdoor running or cycling. In this case, the Apple Watch remembers the route you ran/traveled and you will be able to repeat it - only with the fact that you will try to achieve better results than the last time. In such a case, it is necessary to set the right pace and simply keep up. The watch will therefore inform you about this too and help you achieve predetermined goals.

Better overview of metrics

As we mentioned above, in the new watchOS 9 operating system, Apple brings new displays during exercise. Users will be able to switch between various metrics so that they always know what they need. It is in this mode that a number of other elements will be added. These include, for example, stride length, floor/ground contact time, and vertical oscillation. A brand new labeled metric will also arrive as well Running power or running performance. This will serve the user to measure his effort and will serve to maintain the given level.

A delight for triathletes and swimming measurements

Even during the presentation of the new operating system, Apple boasted an interesting novelty that will come in handy especially for triathletes. The watch with watchOS 9 can automatically distinguish swimming, cycling and running, thanks to which you can continue your activities without having to manually change the type of exercise.

Smaller improvements will also arrive for swimming monitoring. The watch will automatically recognize a new swimming style – swimming with the use of a kickboard – and the apple watchers will still provide as much information as possible. The SWOLF attribute is also a matter of course. It is used among swimmers and serves to measure their efficiency.

Even better performance summarization

The measurement itself is practically useless if the resulting data cannot tell us anything. Of course, Apple is also aware of this. It is for this reason that the new operating systems bring even better summarization of user performance and can thus inform the apple user not only about his results, but mainly help him to be able to move forward.
