Adam Kos At the opening keynote at WWDC22, Apple showed what the new watchOS 9 will be able to do. Of course, there were also new watch faces, as well as improvements to the existing ones. And as is customary with Apple, they are not just a mere date and time display.
Why are watch faces so important? Because they are where the user experience with Apple Watch begins. It's the first thing they see, and also the thing they see most often. That's why it's essential for Apple to help everyone display information relevant to them in the ideal form. The watchOS 9 system received four new watch faces and improved the existing ones.

Pavel Jelic Lunar dial
Apple was inspired here by calendars based on the phases of the moon. Thus, it shows the relationship between the Gregorian and lunar calendars that are used in different cultures. That is also why there are different options for it, and you can also choose Chinese, Hebrew and Muslim. Although it is not very transparent, it will provide a maximum of relevant information.
Playtime
This is a fun dynamic watch face with various animated numbers, which will especially appeal to children. It was designed in collaboration with Chicago artist and designer Joi Fulton. By turning the crown here, you can change the background, when you add confetti, for example, and the figures, or rather numbers, also react when you tap them. But you won't find any complications here.
Metropolitan
It is one of the most customizable watch faces that you can define practically everything and thus create it completely to your style and needs. You can customize both the color of the dial and the background, add up to four complications and make the numbers bigger or smaller as you like.
Astronomy
The Astronomy watch face is actually a redesigned version of the original watch face, but features a new star map and up-to-date data based on your location. The main display can be not only the Earth and the Moon, but also the Solar System. The font of the text can also be customized according to your preferences. Two complications may be present, turning the crown allows you to travel forward or backward in time to observe the phases of the moon or the position of our planet on a different day and time.
Other
The novelty in the form of watchOS 9 also brings improved and modernized complications on some existing classic watch faces. E.g. the Portrait face then displays a depth effect on multiple photos, including those of pets and landscapes. Chinese characters have been added to others such as California and Typograph. You can customize the Modular mini, Modular and Extra large dials with a wide range of colors and transitions. Focus now allows users to select an Apple Watch watch face that will automatically appear when a specific Focus is launched on iPhone.
