While for some it was useful in many ways, others will not miss it at all. We are talking about the Dashboard, which has been part of Apple's desktop operating system since 2005. However, with the arrival of macOS Catalina, the life cycle of this iconic function is definitively over. Apple completely removed it in the new version of the system.

Dashboard arrived on Macs with OS X 10.4 Tiger already 14 years ago. Its main benefit was quick access to basic information such as weather, clock, calculator, calendar or notes in the form of simple widgets. The user could add individual elements to the Dashboard and, within certain limits, it was also possible to determine what information specific widgets would display. In the system interface, the Dashboard was located to the left of the main desktop and was therefore accessible, for example, by a gesture on the trackpad and the Magic Mouse. But it could also be displayed as an overlay, using a keyboard shortcut.

However, in the new macOS 10.15 Catalina, you would be looking for Dashboard in vain. Function with editors from the server appleosophy failed to restore even using commands entered in Terminal. Launchpad even shows only a question mark next to the Dashboard icon, which only confirms that the app is removed from the system.

Dashboard was dying a slow death

The end of Dashboard was more or less expected. The function gradually disappeared from the system. First, Apple disabled Dashboard as a default feature in macOS Yosemite. In last year's macOS Mojave, the function settings were then hidden in the Mission Control section, where it is possible to set the style of displaying the Dashboard and also the keyboard shortcut for its activation.

Currently, the Dashboard doesn't make much sense to most users. Most of its functions are offered by the Today section in the Notification Center, which can be accessed through the icon in the upper right corner of the screen (or by a gesture on the trackpad). It is here that the user can activate widgets for example weather, clock, calendar and many others.

And how do you feel about removing the Dashboard? Will you miss the feature or welcome its end?
