Apple has announced the winners of the 2021 Apple Music Award, an annual award that selects the best artists who have excelled within the service during the year. And since Apple's streaming platform is relatively young, this is only the third time these awards have been presented. It thus continues the long-standing tradition of awarding the best applications and games.

The Apple Music Awards recognize achievements in music in five different categories: Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. Winners are selected through a process that reflects both Apple Music's editorial perspective and what listeners around the world are listening to most on the platform.

The Weeknd as Global Artist of the Year

Canadian R&B and pop singer The Weeknd was voted artist of the year. His album After Hours quickly surpassed one million "pre-orders" on Apple Music and is also the platform's most-streamed album of all time by a male artist. The album also holds the record for the most streamed R&B/Soul album in its first week of release, in 73 countries.

Even an 18-year-old singer won the award Olivia rodrigo. Her album SOUR yielded the highest first-week streams since the album's release worldwide, with all 11 tracks still charting on the Daily Top 100: Global chart, as well as the Daily Top 100 in 66 other countries. She took home three awards for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Singer and instrumentalist HERE she was awarded Songwriter of the Year, thanks to her award-winning album Back of My Mind, which was one of the most streamed R&B/soul albums on Apple Music in its release week.

This year, the Apple Music Award also introduced a new category that honors local artists from five different countries: Africa, France, Germany, Japan and Russia. The company says this honors artists who have had the biggest impact on culture and charts in their respective countries and regions. The following performers won awards for various locations:

  • Africa: Wizkid
  • France: Aya Nakamura
  • Germany: RIN
  • Japan: OFFICIAL HIGE DANDISM
  • Russia: Scriptonite

From December 7, 2021, Apple will then bring special content with interviews and other bonuses related to the award-winning musicians within Apple Music and the Apple TV app. More details can be found on Apple's website.

Apple Design Awards

By the looks of it, we have a new prize announcement tradition here. The first one was introduced by Apple in the case of the Apple Design Awards, the first year of which was held already in 1997, at that time, however, under the name Human Interface Design Excellence Awards. However, these awards were also given out as part of his Worldwide Developers Conference, i.e. WWDC, which did not change even in this year's 25th year. .

As part of Apple TV+, Apple is not (yet) involved in awarding its own prizes. Whether that will be the case in the future is a question. In his filmmaking, he relies rather on world awards, which also have the appropriate weight. After all, this also makes sense, because he himself doesn't have much to choose from yet, and the content doesn't increase that much from year to year. In addition, there is a difference with Apple Music, because in Apple TV+ it is exclusively its own content. In essence, he would be awarding production awards to himself in any case, and that could seem rather unfortunate.
