The presentation of the two larger iPhones was accompanied by thunderous applause at the keynote, but the new phones divide existing and potential users into two camps. While for one group Apple has finally introduced a large enough smartphone, others are disillusioned by their view of oversized phones.

In the seven years of the iPhone's existence, Apple changed the diagonal only once, while the change did not significantly change the dimensions of the entire phone. Until this year, Apple adhered to the philosophy that the phone should be controlled with one hand and its size should be absolutely adapted to it. That's why the company practically had the smallest high-end phone on the market. Although the iPhone is the most successful phone, the question is whether it was because of its size or in spite of it.

Even before the presentation, I was convinced that Apple would keep the existing four inches and add a 4,7-inch version to them, but instead we got 4,7-inch and 5,5-inch screens. The company thus seemingly turned its back on all those who advocated the compactness of the phone. These users will have a hard time now, because they have practically nowhere to go, because practically no one makes high-end phones with a diagonal of around four inches. The only option is to buy a generation older phone, the iPhone 5s, and last as long as possible.

But maybe not all days are over. It must be remembered that Apple had to work on two phones at the same time. Larger diagonals were clearly a priority at Cupertino, and the all-new design required a lot of effort from both Jony Ivo's team and hardware engineers. At the same time, only they know whether Apple simply omitted the four-inch model so that it would not have to deal with the internal design of three models at the same time. For those who really want a small phone, there is still only one generation older device available. Next year, however, the situation could be more problematic, as the iPhone 5s would already be two generations old. If he wanted to thank these Apple users, of course if there was enough demand, he could easily introduce the iPhone 6s mini (or minus) next year.

However, it is also very likely that small phones are simply ending and the trend of large screens and phablets is unstoppable. Although today it may seem that Apple has been defending the compact size of phones for a long time, it should be remembered that the first iPhone was the largest phone on the market in 2007. Back then, people were calling for the iPhone nano.

Over the past seven years, our hands have not evolved to make the argument for compact size and one-handed operation still valid, but the way we use phones has changed. In recent years, the phone has become the primary computing device for many, and calling as such, after all, which is what the iPhone is named after, is an increasingly less frequently used feature. We spend much more time in the browser, on Twitter, Facebook, in RSS readers or chat applications. In all these activities, a larger display is an advantage. With diagonals of 4,7 and 5,5 inches, Apple is de facto saying that it fully respects how the use of phones in general has changed.

Of course, there will still be a large part of people who will use the iPhone from five percent of its capabilities and would rather have a compact device in their pocket than a larger display for reading. With all judgments, it will still be better to wait until we can touch the new iPhones, and at the same time wait to see how Apple itself will approach the four-inch model next year. You can print in the meantime own layout for comparison, or to be significantly more accurate straight away order from China.
