You may be wondering if it is really necessary to write an article dedicated to the possibilities of using the Delete key on the Mac. However, a number of users have not yet fully discovered its possibilities, and use it only for the purpose of deleting text. At the same time, the Delete key on Mac offers many more options for work, not only when working in various documents, but across the entire macOS operating system.

Combination when working with text

Most of you use the Delete key on your Mac to delete text in documents or text boxes. Simply pressing the Delete key while typing will delete the character immediately to the left of the cursor. If you hold down the Fn key at the same time, you can use this combination to delete the characters to the right of the cursor. If you would like to delete entire words, use the keyboard shortcut Option (Alt) + Delete. Even with this combination, you can change the direction by holding down the Fn key.

Delete key in Finder

You can also use the Delete key to move selected items from the native Finder to the Trash. However, pressing this key alone will not result in any action in the Finder. To use the Delete key to delete a file or folder, first click on the selected item with the mouse, then press Cmd + Delete simultaneously. You can then click on the Recycle Bin in the Dock and empty it using the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + Delete. If you would like to delete the selected item from your Mac directly and without moving it to the trash, use the keyboard shortcut Cmd + Option (Alt) + Delete.

Deleting objects in applications

If you're a seasoned Mac user, this way of using the Delete key won't surprise you. But beginners may welcome the information that the Delete key can be used to delete objects in a number of native Apple applications, not only for images and shapes in Keynote or Pages, but also in iMovie.
