With the introduction of new generations of iPhones and iPads, many users think of replacing their old model with a new one. But how to deal with the old one? The ideal way is to sell or donate it, but as part of your own security, it is extremely important to capture two essential aspects - backing up data and safely erasing the device, including restoring the factory settings. With a few simple steps, it can be done without any problems.

Data backup

The data backup process is very useful and takes a few minutes. Using this step, you'll be able to restore your old device's data and settings to your new device, starting right where you left off with your old iPhone or iPad.

Backup can be done in two ways. The first one is to use iCloud and upload your backup to apple cloud. All you need is an iPhone or iPad, an Apple ID, an activated iCloud account, and a Wi-Fi connection.

Settings select an item iCloud, select Deposit (if you don't have it activated, you can activate it right here) and click on Back up. Then you just wait for the process to complete. IN Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage then you just select your device and check if the backup was done ok and saved.

Option number two is to perform a backup via iTunes on your computer. To do this, you need to connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer and launch iTunes. For subsequent faster recovery, it is a good idea to also transfer all purchases from the App Store, iTunes and iBookstore, which you do via the menu File > Device > Transfer Purchases. Then you just click on your iOS device in the sidebar and choose Back up (if you want to save your health and activity data as well, you have to encrypt the backup). IN iTunes Preferences > Devices you can check again if the backup was created correctly.

It's important to note that neither option backs up your photo library. If you are backing up to iCloud, you need to check if you have v Settings > iCloud > Photos activated iCloud Photo Library. If so, then you automatically have all your photos in the cloud. If you back up to a Mac or PC, you can use, for example, system Photos (macOS) or Photo Gallery on Windows.

Erasing device data and restoring factory settings

Before the actual sale, it is just as important as a backup to delete the device afterwards. It may sound trite, but many users do not give this stage the attention it deserves. According to a survey by Aukro's Aukrobot service, which collects various goods (including mobile phones) from their owners and prepares them for safe sale, a full four-fifths of five hundred customers left sensitive data such as photos, contacts, messages, e-mails or account statements and more.

The process of deleting all data, including sensitive personal data, is very easy and should be done by everyone before selling. On your iPhone or iPad, just go to Settings > General > Reset and select an item Erase data and settings. This step will completely erase all the original information and turn off services like iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, etc.

It is also important to deactivate the function Find iPhone, prompting you to enter your Apple ID and password. After entering them, the device will be completely erased and the next owner will not have any of your data and sensitive information available.

If you use iCloud and have the function activated Find iPhone, so it is possible to delete the given device remotely. Just log in to the iCloud web interface on your computer at icloud.com/find, select your iPhone or iPad in the menu and click on Delete and subsequently on Remove from account.
