At the beginning of February, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S23 series consisting of three models - the smallest Galaxy S23, the middle S23+ and the top, the largest and most expensive S23 Ultra. It was the golden mean that reached our editorial office. What is it like for a long-time iPhone user?

The Galaxy S23 is compared to 6,1" iPhones, the 6,6" Galaxy S23+ then logically to the larger ones, i.e. currently primarily to the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max. With a clear conscience, it must be said that the Plus model playfully slips into the pocket. It can lose practically only in the chip, even though Apple used the version from the iPhone 13 Pro. It won't reach the top of the line in the form of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but it's also 7 cheaper and offers the same amount of storage. So it can be a clear decision for Android fans.

Top level specifications

When we got a taste of the performance, that moment of testing will of course not reveal any limits, but they shouldn't be encountered even during a longer test. Samsung gave its top phones the best it could, a specially modified version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, when there is nothing else on the market (except for the A16 Bionic). I haven't noticed any heating yet, also thanks to the greatly enlarged cooling system of the chip.

Everything is running smoothly, animactions are fast, you don't wait for anything. After all, you don't even want that with a premium phone. It is also too early to evaluate the battery, but it should not be a problem, although it is true that Samsung can already put a 5 mAh battery in the mid-range, whereas here there is "only" 000 mAh. However, the iPhone 4 Plus and 700 Pro Max have 14 mAh.

Considering the size, the weight is definitely pleasing, which is under 200 g. You will not recognize the difference of 0,1 inch in the size of the display compared to iPhones. The display looks great. It is a Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a peak brightness of 1 nits and a pixel density of 750 ppi. Although the refresh rate starts at 393 Hz and ends at 48 Hz. The lower value may be noticeable, but only for the battery life, during use it is the higher value with which the iPhone 120 Plus can really get into trouble. Its 14Hz display is a sad sight for such an expensive device these days.

Nice design, strange white

On the design itself, it should be noted that the Galaxy S23+ is a truly beautiful phone. It's not a slob like the model without the Plus moniker, nor is it a giant like the Ultra. However, it has a difficult position on the market, because due to the price, most people choose the smaller model, due to the equipment, on the contrary, the larger one. When we had the green color of the Galaxy S23, there was nothing to complain about, but the cream one is a bit contradictory.

It is clearly supposed to copy the star-white Apple, but the back is more white and the aluminum frame is more yellowish or almost golden. It's literally brutally fingerprint-able, as it's a polished aluminum that may resemble the steel of the iPhone Pro series, but it's far from it. To the touch, it is something that you may not have a very good impression of. It's amazing how much color can do.

The cameras are absolutely identical to those used by Samsung in the Galaxy S23 (and indeed in the previous Galaxy S22 series). It's not the absolute top, but then again, compared to the iPhone 14 Plus model, you have an extra telephoto lens here, which offers more photo options, which the iPhone simply deprives you of. If you don't have any exaggerated expectations, you will be satisfied day and night.

Android doesn't mind

Samsung has come a long way with its One UI, and the whole Android 13 system is really usable here. You have to get used to certain of its regularities, it won't work without it, but it's not such a problem as it was in the past. Maybe something will annoy you, but something will certainly please you. Since Samsung does not shy away from copying functions, you will find both the possibility of personalizing the lock screen and, for example, selecting objects from photos, which Apple just introduced with iOS 16. Surprisingly, it works just as well.

The recommended price is CZK 29 in the 990 GB memory variant, which is roughly the same as what Apple sells the iPhone 256 Plus for, but with a really bad display and only a dual camera. An unbiased person will clearly reach for the better one, where the iPhone definitely does not win in this comparison.
