We all live in a bubble, in our case the "apple" one. Apple is currently the second largest seller of mobile phones, even though it makes the most money from them. Samsung will sell the most, even if it loses behind Apple in terms of profits. Logically, the phones of the South Korean manufacturer are the biggest competition for the American one. And now we got our hands on its flagship model for 2022, the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

At the beginning of February, Samsung introduced a trio of models of its Galaxy S series, which represents the best in the field of smartphones. So in the field of classic smartphones, this article is not about folding devices. So here we have the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra, with the Ultra being the most equipped, largest and most expensive model. You could already read about how Apple users perceive the S22+ model on the Apple website, so now it's the Ultra's turn.

Huge and bright display

Even though I'm holding an iPhone 13 Pro Max in one hand and a Galaxy S22 Ultra in the other, I feel very different about the two phones. When I had the Glaaxy S22+ model at my disposal, it was simply more similar to the iPhone - not only in the shape of the structure, but also in the size of the display and the set of cameras. Ultra is really different, so it can be approached differently.

In the iPhone 13 Pro (Max), Apple has taken a big step with regard to the quality of the display. So not only in the adaptive refresh rate, but also in the increase in brightness and reduction of the cutout. However, the Ultra offers more, as its brightness is the highest you can get in mobile phones. But that's not the main thing with the hand on the heart. Sure, on sunny days you'll probably appreciate the brightness of 1 nits, but you'll still be working primarily with adaptive brightness, which won't reach these values by itself, you'll have to do it manually. The main thing is not even the front camera shot instead of the cutout, which I still can't get used to, because the black dot just doesn't look good (personal opinion).

The main thing is not even the size of the display itself, which has a diagonal of 6,8 inches, when the iPhone 13 Pro Max has 6,7 inches and the Galaxy S22+ has 6,6 inches. The main thing is that we are used to the rounded corners of the iPhone, but the Ultra's display makes a much bigger impression because it has sharp corners and a slightly curved display. This actually extends across the entire front of the device, with thin bezels at the top and bottom. It looks simply nice and, above all, different from what a person is used to from an iPhone.

Many other cameras

The devices also differ from each other in the set of cameras, which are very different in the Ultra. According to DXOMark, it cannot be said that they are better, but they are simply fun to take pictures with. What's annoying is that when you knock with the phone, you hear something clicking inside it. We are not quite used to that with iPhones. However, even according to the manufacturer, this is a common feature of optical stabilization, which was also present in the Galaxy S21 Ultra. When you turn on the Camera, the tapping stops.

Camera specifications:

 • Ultra wide camera: 12 MPx, f/2,2, angle of view 120˚
 • Wide angle camera: 108 MPx, Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1,8, angle of view 85˚
 • Telephoto lens: 10 MPx, 3x optical zoom, f/2,4, angle of view 36˚
 • Periscopic telephoto lens: 10 MPx, 10x optical zoom, f/4,9 angle of view 11˚
 • Front camerat: 40 MPix, f/2,2, angle of view 80˚

We are yet to bring you detailed tests and comparisons with iPhone skills. But given that this is a flagship smartphone, it's obvious that the Ultra just can't take bad photos. Although, of course, you must not completely trust the marketing. The 100x Space Zoom is a nice toy, but that's about it. However, the periscope itself has potential in ideal lighting conditions. But we probably won't see it in the iPhone, which probably also applies to the integration of the stylus. The following photos are compressed for the needs of the website. You will find their full quality here.

With Pen as the main attraction

The most interesting thing about the S22 Ultra model is not the cameras known from the previous generation. Thanks to the integration of the S Pen stylus, the device is more of a Galaxy Note than a Galaxy S. And that doesn't matter. It's actually to the benefit of the cause. You approach the device very differently. If the S Pen is hidden in the body, it is simply a smartphone, but as soon as you take it in your hand, you will be connected to the generation of Note phones, which were previously called "phablets". And the uninitiated user of these phones will just love it.

Not everyone sees the potential in it, not everyone will use it, but everyone will try. It's hard to say if it has long-term potential, but for iPhone owners, it's just something different and interesting, and even after a few hours, it's still fun. You simply put the phone on the table and start controlling it with the stylus. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course, various functions are connected to it, such as notes, instant messages, intelligent selection or you can take selfie photos with it.

If the lenses were not so protruding, it would be really pleasant to control. This is how to deal with constant knocking. It's nothing that a cover can't solve, but it's still annoying. The response of the S Pen is great, the "focus" where you touch the display interesting, the added features useful. In addition, you don't have to worry about losing it, because the device informs you that you haven't cleaned it properly.

I don't and won't run away from Apple's Samsung and iPhone's Galaxy, but I have to say that Samsung has created a really interesting smartphone that looks good, works well and has an added feature that the iPhone lacks. After the experience with the S22+, Android 12 and the One UI 4.1 add-on are no longer a problem. So if anyone thought the iPhone had no competition, they were simply wrong. And just to remind you, this is not a PR article either, just a personal view of the direct competition of Apple and its iPhone.
