Apple entered the new year 2023 with an interesting surprise in the form of new apple computers. Through a press release, he revealed the new 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro and Mac mini. But for now let's stay with the aforementioned laptop. Although it does not bring any change at first glance, it has received an important improvement with regard to its internals. Apple has already deployed the second generation of Apple Silicon chips in it, namely the M2 Pro and M2 Max chipsets, which once again take performance and efficiency a few steps forward.

Specifically, the M2 Max chip is available with up to a 12-core CPU, 38-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine and up to 96GB of unified memory. So the newly introduced MacBook Pro has plenty of power to spare. But it doesn't end there. This is because Apple gives us a little hint about what the even more powerful M2 Ultra chipset could come with.

What the M2 Ultra will offer

The current M1 Ultra is supposed to be the most powerful chipset from the Apple Silicon family to date, which powers the top configurations of the Mac Studio computer. This computer was introduced at the beginning of March 2023. If you are an Apple computer fan, then you know how important the specially designed UltraFusion architecture was for this particular chip. Simply put, it can be said that the unit itself was created by combining two M1 Max. This can also be deduced from looking at the specifications themselves.

While the M1 Max offered up to a 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine and up to 64GB of unified memory, the M1 Ultra chip simply doubled everything – offering up to a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine and up to 128GB of memory. Based on this, one can more or less estimate how his successor will fare. According to the M2 Max chip parameters we mentioned above, the M2 Ultra will offer up to a 24-core process, a 76-core GPU, a 32-core Neural Engine and up to 192GB of unified memory. At least that's how it would look when using the UltraFusion architecture, similar to how it was last year.

On the other hand, we should approach these estimates with caution. The fact that this happened a year ago does not mean that the same situation will be repeated this year. Apple can still modify some specific parts, or surprise with something completely new in the finale. In that case, we go back some time. Even before the arrival of the M1 Ultra chip, experts revealed that the M1 Max chipset was designed in such a way that up to 4 units could possibly be connected together. In the end, we could expect up to four times the performance, but it is possible that Apple is saving it for the very top of its range, namely the long-awaited Mac Pro with a chip from the Apple Silicon family. It should finally be shown to the world already this year.
