After upgrading to the macOS Catalina operating system, a new folder appeared on your desktop Moved items. It takes up about 1,07GB on disk, sometimes less, sometimes more, and in addition to these moved items, you'll also find a PDF document explaining what these files are.

Already in the document itself, Apple admits that these are system files and settings that are not compatible with the latest version of the macOS operating system. In principle, previous versions of the macOS operating system were installed in the same disk partition as your data, but with the installation of macOS Catalina, your storage was divided into two parts, one for the user and the other for the operating system. It is also read-only.

However, as a result, some data is not fully compatible with this new security policy and is therefore data that is essentially useless and taking up space, even though you and your Mac don't need it. However, for users of basic models of MacBooks with 128GB or 64GB of storage, even 1 GB of free space can be useful, so let's see what to do with these items and why to (not) delete them.

Primarily be sure not to delete the folder directly from the desktop, because it's just an alias or link that takes up less than 30 bytes and deleting it won't do anything. If you want to delete files, open the folder and delete the files directly in it using the keyboard shortcut CMD + Backspace. The system will probably ask you to confirm the deletion with a password or Touch ID.

However, if you have deleted the link from the desktop before and you are not sure whether you have also deleted the files in the folder, you can access it via the top menu Go over on the desktop and then choose an option Go to folder. You can also use a keyboard shortcut Shift + CMD + G, which will open the desired window directly on your desktop. Then just enter the path in it Users/Shared/Moved Items and press Enter to open. If the folder opens, it means you still have it on your computer and probably the files in it.

Why and when to delete these files?

Although the folder appears immediately after upgrading to macOS Catalina, it is not recommended to delete it immediately. The operating system doesn't need these files anymore, and obviously the vast majority of apps don't either, but it may happen that an app warns you that some files are missing in the weeks or months after moving to macOS Catalina. Even then, in the vast majority of cases, the application restores the missing files by itself after opening, and if not, it will certainly do so during its reinstallation.

It is therefore recommended to delete the contents of the folder or the folder as such only after you are 100% sure that everything works as it should in macOS Catalina.
