After updating your Mac, you may have noticed a "Moved Items" folder on your system desktop. If you're like most users, chances are you've sent this file straight to the trash to be deleted. But you still haven't deleted these items. Here you will find out how to proceed to make it happen.

Even if you trashed the folder, it was only a shortcut and not the actual location of the moved files. You can find the Moved Items folder in Shared on Macintosh HD.

How to find moved items in macOS Monterey:

  • Open it Finder
  • Select in the menu bar Open
  • Choose Computer
  • Then open it Macintosh HD
  • Select a folder Users
  • Open it Shared and here you already see Moved items

What are relocated or moved items

In this folder, you'll find files that failed to move to a new location during the last macOS update or file transfer. You will also find a folder named Configuration. These configuration files were then modified or customized in some way. Changes could have been made by you, another user or some application. However, it may no longer be compatible with the current macOS.

So the relocated files are essentially configuration files that become unusable when you upgrade or update your Mac. However, to make sure nothing "breaks" during the upgrade, Apple moved these files to a safe location. Usually these files are no longer needed by your computer and you can delete them without consequences if you want. Which can come in handy as some can take up a lot of storage space.

Opening the folder allows you to check what files are inside. This could be data related to specific third-party programs, or it could be outdated system files for your Mac. Either way, your Mac has discovered that they simply aren't important to it anymore.
