It's quite easy to forget the fact that today's smartphones are actually compact computers with more power than many computers. Nevertheless, it is computers that offer a work experience that a phone cannot provide. Or yes? In the case of Samsung DeX, indeed, to some extent. This South Korean manufacturer has become a leader in turning a smartphone into a desktop computer. In quotes, of course.

So DeX is a tool that wants to make you have a laptop in your phone. This function has even been present in the best smartphones of the manufacturer since 2017. And yes, that is the problem - even if some do not allow DeX, others do not even know what it is and why they should use it. But imagine if you just connected your iPhone to a monitor or TV and had macOS running on it. Would you like it?

Simple, elegant and practical

Even in the world of Samsung, of course, it's not so clear-cut, because you're still working with Android, not Windows, but the environment is already quite similar to it. Here you have windows that you work with in the same way as on the surface of a desktop system (including macOS), you can open applications in them, drag data between them, etc. Your device, i.e. typically a mobile phone, then works as a trackpad. Of course, you can also connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard for the maximum possible experience.

Additionally, DeX-enabled devices do not need to download any app to use this feature. Does it start automatically or when you connect the device to the monitor does the given notification appear giving you a choice - use DeX or just mirror the content? In addition, the function is already so far that it also works wirelessly on certain devices. So much for connecting the phone to the monitor, but DeX also works on tablets, independently and without the need for an additional display.

True multitasking

iPads are still criticized for their multitasking. Samsung's Android tablets are still Android tablets, but if you turn on DeX on them, it opens up a fairly comprehensive workspace that can get the most out of the device. Even though Samsung manufactures its laptops, it does so in a limited market, or rather not worldwide, so it does not officially sell them in our country. Even if he does, he doesn't have to solve any unification of systems, because he doesn't really have any (only the One UI superstructure).

But Apple keeps mentioning how it doesn't want to unify iPadOS with macOS, while it seems to be the only feasible way. Instead, it brings various functions, such as Universal Control, but it does not turn the iPad into a computer, rather you just expand your computer with the iPad and its capabilities. I'm not saying I need something like DeX on iPhones and iPads, I'm just saying it could be a really practical solution to replace a Mac in certain cases where you can't currently use it.
