Apple presented its new operating systems at the opening keynote at WWDC22. iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13 Ventura, watchOS 9 have arrived, and tvOS 16 has wandered into us somewhere. But has it really just been lost somewhere, or does Apple actually have nothing to say about it, and that's why it doesn't focus on it at all anymore? Unfortunately, "B" is actually correct.

Already at WWDC21, we did not hear any relevant mention of tvOS 15, although Apple at least showed the screen calibration here (in the end there were more of those innovations, such as support for surround sound on Apple TV 4K with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max). At WWDC22, however, he did not say a word about this platform. Does that mean he has nothing more to offer us? It's quite possible. We can rely on the information available in the Apple Online Store.

Lack of information

It is in the official Apple online store that we can not only buy the company's products, but of course we can also learn all the necessary information about them here. Its structure is relatively clear, where right at the top we see a strip of offers with individual products. When you click on the Mac, iPad, iPhone or Watch offers, you will also find a mention of what their current operating system can do, which is available in the products, under a separate tab. If you scroll down, you will also find a link to the upcoming versions of the systems, i.e. those introduced at WWDC22.

And as you may have guessed, there is one exception. This is TV and Home, which in the domestic case actually focuses only on the range of smart boxes Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, the Apple TV application, the Apple TV+ platform and accessories. So you will no longer find the tvOS 15 tab here, and if you scroll down, there is no link to tvOS 16 anywhere.

Matter will be the main thing

Apple has been adding news to tvOS very slowly in recent years, but it is true that tvOS 16 will probably be the most insignificant update in years. In fact, the novelties of the system practically only include support for Joy-Cons and Pro Controller Nintendo Switch and other game controllers working with Bluetooth and USB interfaces, or the addition of intensity metrics during exercise in the Fitness+ platform directly on the screen (not with us). But then there is the addition of support for the Matter platform, which was already discussed more extensively at the keynote, and which is a certain alternative to Apple's Home.

Although we can count the news on the fingers of one hand, it is the last mentioned one that will have a big impact on users who will connect the entire ecosystem of their smart products through Matter. And Apple TV will be in it. Even so, it is true that the TV system may already be able to do everything essential from Apple's point of view, and focusing on further adding functions (such as a web browser) is just an unnecessary increase in functions. The second thing is that Apple is slacking off and many functions of Apple TV are taken over by the smart TVs themselves, because they have Apple TV+, they have Apple Music and they can also AirPlay 2. But they still cannot function as a home center or do not have the possibility to install applications from the App Store, or use the Apple Arcade platform.
