You can find a lot of web storage in the internet world and one such service is called CloudApp. Files can be shared on it in several ways. Either directly from the web application or using a simple client for your Mac. There are also handy apps for the iPhone.

Although an official Apple phone client is still pending (unlike the competition), there are several third-party apps available in the App Store that access your CloudApp account. According to the developers, the official client is being worked on, but we don't know when it will be ready. But before we go to the actual review of these applications, let's clarify what CloudApp is for.

The purpose is simple. CloudApp lets you upload images, songs, videos, files and links to the web as easily as possible. You can then access your uploads via the web interface from all over the world, you only need to know your name, password and, of course, have access to the Internet. If you own a Mac, uploading files is even easier.

Do you think it wouldn't be bad if you could access your files not only from your computer but also from your iPhone? The application will serve you well for this Cloudette for CloudApp or Cloud2go. But we wouldn't mention two applications if they could both do the same thing.

The first thing that catches your eye is the price. While Cloudette for CloudApp is completely free, Cloud2go costs $2,99. As you will see below, it is a reasonable price. Both clients have the same function – displaying uploaded files and uploading others. Cloudette is simpler but offers fewer features than Cloud2go.

Cloudette for CloudApp

The app will first ask for a name and password to access your CloudApp account. Then all uploaded files will be loaded into the application. The list is clear - you can see the name, the type of the file and the number of views (ie when you share the file with other people). As you are used to from iOS, you can delete files by dragging your finger. Of course you can view everything, and I haven't come across a file yet that Cloudette can't handle. There is no problem with a PDF or an Excel table either.

You can copy the link to the given file directly from the application and share it further. But you can also let them know about it by email or send a link to Twitter, which is connectable to Cloudette. And the last option is to save the image to your phone.

The second part of Cloudette is uploading files. Click the plus button in the upper right corner and choose whether you want to add/shorten the link, upload an image from the library or use the camera. Cloudette can also be found in system settings, where you can change your account and select the Twitter client you use on your iPhone. Twitter for iPhone, Icebird, Osfoora and Twitterriffic are currently supported.

Cloudette also supports iOS 4 and the multitasking that comes with it, so it can upload files in the background. In the future, the developers plan to integrate fullscreen image display, search and the ability to listen to music files in the background. And during development, the iPad is not forgotten either.

Cloud2go

Paid Cloud2go will also welcome you with a login screen. Unlike the free client, a list of all files will not pop up at you, but a clearly arranged menu. Cloud2go sorts your files into images, links, text notes, packed archives, audio, video, and the rest is in the last item Other (PDF, Office and iWork documents and others).

In addition, you can adjust the menu to suit you in terms of reordering items according to the frequency of use. For the files themselves, Cloud2go offers similar features to its competitor. Besides deleting the file, you can save it to your phone or copy its link. You can copy the image to the clipboard and open the link in Safari. You can notify about all uploads by email. Unlike Cloudette, Cloud2go already supports search, so you can easily find your files.

You can record a photo or video directly from your phone and upload it immediately. The application supports copy & paste. So if you have some text in the clipboard, you can publish it on the web right away. In Cloud2go, you can also open, for example, an attachment from Mail.app that supports application integration.

Even Cloud2go has support for iOS4, multitasking and background upload.

Verdict

Who to choose as the winner? I have to admit that the fight was not entirely fair, because comparing a paid and a free application is not quite the same. Therefore, if you are not a demanding user and only want to have an overview and possibly access to uploaded files, choose option one, Cloudette for CloudApp. If you don't mind spending a few euros, you won't be disappointed with Cloud2go and you'll get a few extra features.
