Although it may appear from the name of the application, Clippy (also known as Mr. Sponka) is not a helper from older versions of MS Office. It won't help you write a letter in Word, but it will expand the otherwise limited system clipboard.

If you often copy and paste text, you may have thought how great it would be if there was a way for the system to remember multiple copied things or have multiple text boxes. Clippy is just the extension you've been looking for.

This application runs in the background and remembers all the text you save to the clipboard. It can hold up to 100 such records. So, as soon as you want to return to a previously saved text that you have already overwritten in the clipboard, just click on the icon at the top of the menu and then select the desired text from the list. This will copy it as a new record to the clipboard, which you can then paste anywhere. So with Clippy you get a kind of history of your clipboard.

In order to have Clippy active immediately after turning on the computer, it must be included among the applications that start with the system startup. You can find this setting in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Then just tick Clippy in the list and you're done.

In the application preferences, you can then choose how many records the application should remember and how they will be displayed in terms of length. The last option is the interval after which the text from the clipboard is saved to Clippy.

Tips

If the Clippy utility doesn't suit you, there are several other solutions. For example Clips remembers not only texts, but also pictures and clippings. You can try the trial version for fifteen days, after which you pay €19,99.

Clippy has one annoying feature, namely the unnecessary display of an icon in the dock, although the application is running in the background and only needs a tray icon to run. If you want to get rid of the icon in the dock, download the program Dock Dodger. After launching it, you will see a window where you need to drag Clippy from the folder Applications. Then you just need to restart the application and after that it will no longer appear in the dock. To revert the changes, repeat this process and the icon will return to the dock. However, if you wait until the next update, the author has promised a fix.

Clippy, this useful utility, can be found in the Mac App Store.
