The Apple Watch naturally comes with a variety of straps. Apple really cares about them, which is why they release new and new series quite often. Today, not only classic pull-through straps are available, but also pull-on, knitted, sports, leather and there are also Milanese stainless steel pulls. But have you ever wondered why nowadays we still don't have so-called smart bracelets that could expand the functionality of the watch itself?

If you are one of our regular readers, then you may remember last year's June article about the fact that the Apple Watch Series 3 should have been equipped with a special connector for connecting smart straps and other accessories. Apple has been playing around in this area for a long time, which is also evidenced by various registered patents. In addition, there are several speculations in this segment. According to earlier leaks, a special connector for the straps was supposed to serve for possible biometric authentication, automatic tightening or offer, for example, an LED indicator. But there were even mentions of a modular approach.

A brilliant solution to the battery life problem

Before we look at the aforementioned modular approach to smart bands, let's recall one of the biggest problems with the Apple Watch. This Apple smartwatch boasts a number of amazing features, a quality display and a great connection with the iPhone, which no one can deny. After all, that is why they are also considered the best in their category. However, they fall far behind in one point, which is why Apple faces considerable, but justified, criticism. The Apple Watch offers a relatively low battery life. According to the official specifications, the watch only offers up to 18 hours of endurance, which can be significantly reduced, for example, when using activity monitoring, active LTE (for Cellular models), making calls, playing music, and the like.

An accessory in the form of a smart strap could solve exactly this problem. These would make it possible to connect additional hardware of various types to the Apple Watch, which would bring with it a number of other advantages. In such a case, the strap could function, for example, as a power bank and thus significantly extend the life of the device, or it could be used for the temporary addition of additional sensors, speakers and others. Here it would only depend on the possibilities of the manufacturer.

The future of smart straps

Unfortunately, there is no official information about the arrival of smart straps, which is why we are limited to various leaks and speculations. It should also be mentioned that we will most likely not see similar accessories anytime soon. There is practically no talk of anything like this lately. Perhaps the last relevant mention came last June, when a photo of the aforementioned Apple Watch Series 3 prototype with a special connector flew across the Internet. But one thing is certain – smart straps could set quite an interesting trend.
