In recent months, you could register several different reports regarding the development of an AR/VR headset from Apple. However, if you also follow the actions of other companies, you must not have missed that several important technological giants are currently working on something similar. From this, one can only conclude – smart glasses/headsets are probably the intended future in the world of technology. But is this the right direction?

Of course, a similar product is not completely new. The Oculus Quest VR/AR headset (now part of the Meta company), Sony VR headsets that allow players to play in virtual reality on the Playstation console, Valve Index gaming headset, and we could continue like this for a while have been on the market for a long time. In the near future, Apple itself intends to enter this market, which is currently developing an advanced headset with a focus on virtual and augmented reality, which will take your breath away not only with its options, but quite possibly with its price as well. But Apple is not the only one. Completely new information surfaced about the fact that competitor Google is also starting to develop a so-called AR headset. It is currently being developed under the code name Project Iris. At the same time, during the recent CES 2022 trade fair, it was announced that Microsoft and Qualcomm are working together on the development of chips for ... again, of course, a smart headset.

Something is wrong here

According to these reports, it is evident that the segment of smart headsets will play a relatively important role in the future and high interest can be expected. However, if you take a good look at the information mentioned above, it is quite possible that something in it will not suit you. And you are right. Among the named companies, one essential giant is missing, which, by the way, is always a few steps ahead in adapting the latest technologies. We are specifically talking about Samsung. This South Korean giant has directly defined the direction in recent years and has often been ahead of its time, which is confirmed, for example, by its transition to the Android system, which took place more than ten years ago.

Why haven't we registered a single mention of Samsung developing its own smart glasses or headset? Unfortunately, we do not know the answer to this question, and it will probably take another Friday before the whole thing becomes clear. On the other hand, Samsung leads in a slightly different segment, which has a certain similarity with the mentioned area.

Flexible phones

The whole situation can be a little reminiscent of the former state of the flexible phone market. At that time, various reports circulated on the Internet that manufacturers were currently focusing on their development. Since then, however, only Samsung has been able to establish itself, while the others are rather more restrained. At the same time, we can come across one interesting thing here. Although it may seem that smart glasses and headsets are the future in the world of technology, in the end it may quite possibly be otherwise. The aforementioned flexible phones were also discussed in a similar way, and although we already have a model at a relatively reasonable price, specifically the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3, whose price is comparable to flagships, there is not so much interest in it anyway.

The concept of a flexible iPhone
The concept of a flexible iPhone

For this reason, it will be interesting to see what direction the entire segment of augmented and virtual reality will take. At the same time, if the offer is significantly expanded and de facto every manufacturer brings an interesting model, it is almost clear that healthy competition will move the entire market forward. After all, this is something we don't see with flexible phones today. In short, Samsung is the uncrowned king and has virtually no competition. Which of course is a shame.
