Apple Insider a few days ago he brought "guaranteed" information that the new series of Macbooks will indeed feature a new Nvidia chipset instead of the current solution from Intel. For now, this chipset is known under the working name of MCP79. What benefits would Apple (and the user) get from this?

  • the chip would take up less space, as only one would be needed instead of the current two
  • Drivecache, which uses flash memory to speed up booting
  • HybridSLI, which can switch from dedicated to integrated graphics and thus we get longer battery life during operations that are not graphically demanding (surfing the Internet)

The new series will of course also include an increase in graphics performance, as Nvidia will supply newer models of graphics cards to the Macbook. The Macbook Pro should get the 9600GT and the Macbook should be available in Nvidia 9300/9400 variants. These should be a bit further in performance than the solution from Intel. Such more powerful graphics cards are mainly due to the approaching new version of the Snow Leopard operating system, which will be able to move basic operations to graphics cards.

However, the move to the new solution from Nvidia may not be completely problem-free, and I am curious to see how it will turn out on Tuesday.
